DS age 9 has been suffering with acid reflux for a few months now. Does anyone know what foods are safe to eat without making this worse?

Reflux in a child seems unusual to me? I have never heard of a child complaining of this before. Worth a trip to the docs just to check what is going on?

this is the NHS advice section on Acid Reflux

It suggests smaller meals and trying to avoid foods which it is worse after. It's quite common in pregnancy (obviously not your DS's problem!) and antacids like gaviscon + rennie (not sure if they would be suitable for a child or not), natural yoghurts and milk and sleeping propped up all get recommended.

it cant be too unusual my dd 8 suffers from it and also my ds aged 2.. he has terrible silent reflux as a baby and turns out he has a hiatus hernia. there is medication they can take to cut down any acid production in the stomach, i would make an app to see gp and in the mean time it is fine to give 5ml of gaviscon.. foods that can make it worse are chocolate, banana tomatoe caffeine, fizzy drinks, citrus fruits and course anything spicy

Thank you both for your replies.

I originally thought DS had a problem with his throat after eating and took him to gp. GP said he was suffering from acid reflux. Gave him gaviscon and it does help but he needs to take it every night (doesnt seem to happen after lunch). Been back to GP and he doesnt seem too concerned so I though I would try to find food which helps. Yoghurt seems to help a bit.

a small piece of licorice every day. this works in two ways. 1. its helps the stomach move the contents on and 2. something in the licorice root extract helps the stomach secrete more mucus.

dont give them chocolate unless its white chocolate. normal chocolate contains cafeine and this just makes your stomach secrete more stomach acid. and definately no cafinated drinks!

DietDiva, how is your DS now? I am now in the same boat as you and hope you can tell me how she is doing and whats helping her. Very grateful for your time.

Hi, my DD also has reflux from time to time, apparently it’s more common in children than you’d think.

What has helped us (other than gaviscon) is eating tea earlier so there is a gap before bedtime, also little and often rather than loads at once.

I think the only food we found made it worse was chocolate but Dd doesn’t like acid foods like citrus or raw tomato anyway.
