Croup and steroids - anyone else with any experience of this?

We had a scary spell in A&E last night when our 22 month old DS' croup turned nasty (steam treatment and open windows weren't helping at all) and we couldn't bring his fever down below 39 degrees. DS was started on antibiotics for a throat infection and they also gave him a one-off dose of steroids to reduce the inflammation of his airways.

He seems quite a bit better today (fingers crossed), although he was pretty rough this morning.

DS doesn't seem to have the greatest of immune systems. Although there was no doubt he needed help with his breathing, I'd like to hear from anybody who can offer information regarding the steroids. I seem to recall they lower the immune system. Can anybody tell me more about this? Would it be best to keep him away from other children (and thus more bugs) for a bit? If so, for how long? What other side effects do they have?

Thank you!

My ds2(7) had had at least four courses a year of oral steroids since birth due to his asthma, a one-off dose will not compromise your son's immune system, don't worry.

It's nigh on impossible to avoid things at this time of year unless you completely hibernate but since it's Christmas and there's no school or playgroups you have the perfect excuse!

Hope he's feeling better soon Xmas Smile

As a one off dose I wouldn't worry.

DS has had steroids for croup and for his asthma before and is on a daily steroid inhaler. It is close on impossible to avoid others anyway.

Hope he feels better soon.

DD2 has had steroids quite a few times for croup and the only side effect I ever noticed was that she was hyperactive for a few hours afterwards. You should absolutely keep him away from other children for a few days so he doesn't pass his virus on but other than that I wouldn't be worried about him catching anything else. Hope he feels better soon!

A one off dose of steroids is quite standard with croup and bronchiolitis and lots of other respiratory track things.

Hope that he feels better soon.
