my 8 year old ds fainted in assembly at school on Monday, I collected him straight away and he seemed fine, a bit shaky and pale but ok later on in the day.

Dh took him to the doctors that night who checked him all over and said he was absolutely fine and fainting can be common in children.

I decided to keep him off school and on wednesday when ds woke up he was full of a cold so I presumed he just had a virus, gave calpol and decided to keep him off the rest of the week.

Yesterday absolutely fine, snuffley etc but fine in himself, he has very little appetite at the best of times but the last few weeks, he has been eating little but enough to get by.

He had 2 pieces of pizza last night and slept very well, this morning I was in the bathroom with him, I was having a wash and he was chatting to me when I realised his speech was slurred and he wasn't making any sense. When I turned to look at him the left side of his mouth was extremely drooped and he was drooling a lot from that side.

I sat him on the floor and asked him to try and smile, the corner of his mouth would not lift at all, his face flushed red and then suddenly he was back to normal.

We took him straight to a&e, his temps fine, bps fine, blood sugar is 4.3 (fine?) load of testing his reflexes etc.

He's seems to have a slight weakness and not much of a reflex reaction in his left arm, couldn't walk along a straight line very well.

They have admitted him onto a ward and have taken bloods, results not back yet, they are also talking about doing a scan, if not tonight then as an outpatient.

Dh is staying the night with him, ds seems happy but still won't eat much, he's had a bananna a yogurt and some gingerbread today.

Has any one any experience of faints? I'm so worried, doc said could be a childhood mini stroke or seizure, then again could be just fainting episodes.

Scary - hope he feels better and you get some answers soon

Sorry I have no useful experience to share

MissBetsyTrotwood · 16/12/2011 19:26

You poor thing, how very scary for you all. I have no experience to offer, just best wishes. You were there when it happened, you noticed, you took it seriously, now he's in the right place.

Good luck.

So sorry to read you're going thru this. Please don't Google because the possibilities are endless, but the highest probability is that it's something that can be successfully treated. I hope you get some answers soon.

Thank you all for your replies, dh said his blood test results came back extremely low salt levels last night so they have taken more blood to retest.

What can cause this? He has had no sickness at all just a rubbish diet,
I'm on my way with dd to see him, wondering if maybe they will put him on a drip to replace salt levels?

Drip for a day sounds likely, they'll know what to do, keep us updated if you can. Xmas Smile.

We can go home! The second blood test was fine, they've said it's seizures or mini strokes and he has to go back in for a MRI scan probably next week to get to the bottom of whats causing them, he's still weak on his left side but still smiling.

They've said he may not even have any more just could be something going on in his body the last couple of weeks, we have to just keep a close eye on him.

Thanks for all your responses.

That's a good start - hope the MRI shows its just his body having a growth spurt and his brain panicking while trying to keep up (if thats how it works?) rather than anything more long term worrying
Hope you get some more detailed answers quickly so you don't worry over Christmas
