What could this be?

Ds has a very itchy back. It comes and goes all day and night. No rash, no spots, but maybe a ever so slightly blotchy patch.(He has this most of the time. Doctor has seen and is not worried, its also on his tummy. I dont think its related, but just in case.)

Does anyone have any idea as to what this could be?

Perhaps you could try him on some antihistamine to see if that settles things down.

How old is he?

DD gets this usually when her skin is dry, altho' not much to see, often affects her back and neck. We use aveeno after her bath, particularly when she's been swimming.

Sounds like some sort of mild allergy/irritation to me. Try an antihistimine and see if it improves. Oilatum in the bath is a good idea (it's liquid paraffin) as it softens and hydrates the skin. As dcd said, Aveeno cream morning and night is also a good idea. If none of this helps, try looking at his diet. Is the rash worse after eating certain foods? You could keep a food diary to see if you can establish a connection to a particular type of food. The only other thing I can think of is changing your washing powder to a hypoallergenic one. Do you have pets? Could it be some sort of allergy to this? HTH

Ds is 4.
Is there a antihistamine that's ok for his age?
Blotchy patch isn't there today but he's still itching, so I don't think that's related!
The only pet we have is a hamster. We've had him for nearly two years and ds doesn't really go near him.
I might take him to the Doctors tomorrow, but to be honest I don't think they will say anything I haven't already thought of.
I'm stuck!!!!

Piriton is from 1 year I think. My DS had it from the age of 2 for hayfever. Ask the chemist for advice but I'm pretty sure it's fine

PoptartPoptart · 15/12/2011 19:19

Forgot to say, lots of people I know gave piriton when their DC's had chickenpox as it really helped to relieve the itching. HTH

Dry skin?
And lots of scratching/rubbing the area can make it red / blotchy.

Docs can prescribe cetirizine which is non drowsy.
