Break, sprain or nothing?

DS2 (9) hurt is wrist/arm playing football on Saturday just gone. At the time he was crying in pain, but there was no swelling or bruising.

Today he says he is still in pain (but not agony and not needing Calpol). He has been going to school but had to do a note for PE today.

I don't know what to make of it. I keep hearing things about broken bones and not knowing it. Confused

My heart was in my mouth when they asked him croissant. I made it look worse because although me and DH were there neither of us actually saw it happen (we were watching DS1's match and DS2 was having a penalty shoot out with his mates). He went into huge irrelevant detail as usual. Hmm

Just back from fracture clinic. He now has a bright blue soft cast to wear for three weeks. Then we can cut it off ourselves. Shock

No footy for 6 weeks. Sad

You are not a bad Mummy. The second time DD2 broke her wrist she managed to go to bed and sleep on one does of Calpol.
No minor brake, clean through both bones, set under GA. She knew it was broken, she didn't want it to be, she knew we wouldn't be able to go on holiday.
I spent the other week wondering whether to take her very painful leg to the Drs.
It took a good 5 days for her to stop moaning (I don't think she ever moaned about broken arms).

Oh and Drs are no better. It took DF two visits and being very determined to get them to realise her DS had dislocated his shoulder and was not simply making a fuss,

Sparklingbaubles · 15/12/2011 11:54

It has really shocked me that I didn't know but it seems I'm not the only one startail. I didn't want to waste the hospital's time. Sad

Any tips for keeping the cast clean/dry?

You can get cast protectors if you look online. Waterproof type things so he can have a bath etc.

Sorry to hear about the footie Sad

There is a product called Limbo that makes cast covers to wear in the shower/bath. You can order online.

Also a lot of larger pharmacies sell a cheaper version which is basically a thick polythene tube with an elasticated toggle at each end.

From experience a wet plaster can smell v v bad (thats speaking from experience of when I broke my ankle!)

Sparklingbaubles · 15/12/2011 16:34

Will check them out thanks croissant. I assume the whole thing will reek and be minging after 3 weeks no matter how hard we try?

Put it this way, DS's arm cast, just inside the bit nearest his hand (where it's lined with cream tubigrip bandage) was a fetching shade of dark brown by the time it came off.

I didn't sniff it but he did and apparently it was 'a bit whiffy'.

Also, the technician in the plaster room said that's its not unusual (especially with boys) to find things like bits of Lego, sweets, coins etc inside the cast when it comes off. Luckily DS didn't lose anything down there but came close a few times when poking a long piece of K'nex down to scratch an itch.

Ewww. That sounds like something to look forward to Croissant. He had the splint on for 24 hours and it was a bit moist where his palm was!
