5 year old DS SOOOO skinny. Should I be worried?

Title says it all really. DS is 5, 6 in May. Eats well, not fussy, loves his food really, but is very slim. Shoulder blades are pointy and sharp and you can see his ribs. He still has that 'little boy round belly' though, but then skinny little legs and arms. He eats cereal/porridge for breakfast, or 2 slices of toast, big packed lunch, then a snack after school, like fruit or malt loaf etc, then a big dinner, followed by yoghurt or rice pudding etc for afters. Big glasses of milk through the day too. All this and he looks like I don't feed him! DH says he was the same as a little boy, and the same til he was about 14. He says it's just how some kids are. Is he right? Should I be worried?

TIA

How tall is he and how much does he weigh?

He sounds pretty similar to DS who is 8 and I don't worry about him at all. Looking at his friends quite a few look pretty similar - the ones who have a larger build are fewer in number.

Does your DS have enough energy? If so I wouldn't worry.

SleepyCaz · 12/12/2011 22:35

Hi Suitable :)

Not sure how tall he is, he's about the same height as his friends in the same class (Year 1). He weighs 19KG. His little sister is 3 in 6 weeks though, and she weighs 17KG! But she isn't fat, she seems just right, a sturdy toddler. Maybe I'm over-thinking. As for energy, he is up to 100 miles an hour all day. Literally doesn't sit still for five minutes.

Thanks for the reply.

If he eats well and has plenty of energy, then I reckon your DH is right, it is just how he is. My DS is the same, except he is short for his age too. I certainly wouldn't worry! Xmas Smile

My dd is 6 and 2 stone. She is soooo skinny. She eats fine, but her dad was always very skinny growing up. Well she certainly didn't hey it from me Grin

ASuitableGirl · 12/12/2011 22:43

My DD is a couple of years younger than DS and for ages was about 2kg lighter than him and she also wasn't fat - just was a bit more sturdy. At 6 she is definitely getting a bit thinner looking now but not as skinny as DS.

As he has lots of energy and is eating well I think it is just how he is made. And it is better to be on the thinner side I think.

Thanks all :)

Relieved to hear it's not just him that's a bit on the skinny side. In his clothes, he doesn't look any different to his friends, but then I guess they might be the same underneath too, IYSWIM. He's the only one I see with his tummy out, hehe! Maybe a good load of Christmas food will pad him out :)

My 2 youngest are the same, they certainly don't take after their mother!

hi, my ds is the same age (6 in May) about 120cm and 18kg, skinny, sounds just like your ds - he'll eat loads but doesn't gain weight, he does however run out of energy quicker than his brothers (less reserves?) and his sticking out belly has been put down to his hypermobility (slightly curved spine and less core strength) but we;re not worried if that helps at all x

oh and can't find trousers that stay up! ended up just buying bigger pants so his bum crack isn't on display!
