hi there, my 4 month old ds has started teething (rosy cheeks and drooling for past few weeks and very irritable the past few days so i presume teething).
i gave him some calpol once a day the past 3 days and it seemed to help (the recommended amount for his age). however, i dont want to get reliant on this - is once a day dose of calpol ok or is it too much?

i bought him a few teething rings but he just drops them all the time and isnt great at getting them into his mouth by himself yet.

I use calpol when it's really awful for him but mostly something like dentinox or bonjela teething gels.

Sometimes the powders can be effective but pricey!

Ibuprofen can be more effective for teething because it's a better anti-inflammatory - we found we didn't need to use it as often either. You could always alternate them too. We found that we needed to dose most days with DS for about a week, then he would go several weeks without needing anything (yet teeth took months to appear).

I loved Nelsons homeopathic teething granules, the scientist in me knows that they shouldn't work, but the mum in me knows that DD was much happier after she had had them.

I've always got bongela teething gel to hand and also ashton parsons powders.

Cucumber sticks fresh out the fridge can be easier for them to shove in their mouth than some of those big teething rings.... And dont worry if he's not weaning yet as he wont be able to break a bit off and it doesnt reallt taste of much.

Once a day calpol is fine, but it could be a while before any teeth actually pop through, so finding another solution might be helpful.... good luck Xmas Smile

thanks for all the tips! chemist recommended the nelsons homeopathic teething gel - it seems just ok, but not amazing - although maybe thats because he seems to suck it off my finger before i can get it onto his gums!! will try these tips here and see what works for the little one...

thanks again :)

i use the nelsons granules, they seem to work. watch out as prices really vary, i've seen then at about 4.70 in boots but sometimes in asda they are only £3

Another Nelsons Granules fan here, mixed with a sugar free gel (not just before eating though, numbed his mouth so well he slobbered everywhere). Grin

omri · 13/12/2011 14:46

any tips on getting it on his actual gums?! ;) he just slobbers all over and i think i get maybe 10% on his gums and the rest is all over his tongue, mouth, chin and cheeks! hopefully i'll get more skilled at the application as the days go by.....!

If he's screaming I would just tip his head back and drop it in, he used to gag a bit but at least it went in. If he was calmer I used to wet my finger and rub it around his gums

omri · 13/12/2011 14:59

thanks. actually thats a good idea - maybe if i do it with a wet finger first he'll get more relaxed about it, then i'll stealthily add the gel :)

I bought some of the camomile granules from Ainsworths homeopathic pharmacy on Wimpole street. They used to mail it to me if I couldn't pick it up. It was very good.

Anyone used the amber beads? Not sure how/if they work but some mums swear by them.

ItsTimeToBurnThisDiscoDown · 22/12/2011 22:30

You can get a teether dummy made by tommee tippee, it's curved and solid so they can bite it, and you can put the gel on it so it goes where it should! I got mine from tesco.

Hard frozen bagels - really helped.
