9 mo caught virus 3 weeks ago, according to dr was bronchilitis (sp?), bad cough, very coldy etc and diarrhoea. Everything cleared up now except the runny bum. I have been to my gp four times now, today she spoke to the paediatric registrar at the hospital for advice who has asked he be put on dioralyte for the next 24 hous and I'm to take him for 2 'official' weigh ins and if he loses weight in between today and next week he is to be referred as a high priority. He explained to my gp that the virus may have caused a milk intolerance so the 24 hours off of it may help.

I have followed all advice up to date; bland food, hydration sachets, watered down milk (he was bfed until 5 mo but now on aptamil). He has never become dehydrated, seems hungry, WANTS his milk and has cut a top tooth (and about to cut the one next to it I think). Not sure if any of this relevant but thought might paint a bigger picture. I do not want to wait another week as if it continues I'm very worried about his weight and truth be told I'm going away the week after next and want it dealt with before then. He has just had 6 oz of the dioralyte and it has gone straight through him!!! What would you do?

Will preface by saying i'm no medic.

Dd had diarrhoea for 2 weeks. On advice of gp we halved the amount of powder formula in her bottles, but kept water the same and replaced with live yoghurt. It improved in a couple of days.

If he's developed a temporary milk intolerance ( which is possible) I would keep him off all dairy for over 2 weeks not 24hrs. It takes about 2 weeks for it to get out of your system. Then I would try dairy again and if it returned keep them off dairy for a few months.

The substituting the milk formula is the hard part. You can get prescribed alternatives but Dr's don't like to give them out as they are amazingly expensive. I think you can get soya formula in the bigger supermarkets which might work as a temporary measure. And then obviously cut out all dairy in his diet ( easier than you think).

It could just still the virus and teething. And that's just patience. But it's dragging on....

Dr said live yoghurt good as is already partly digested.

My dd had secondary lactose intolerance following a severe episode of the rota virus. I was told to keep her off dairy for 6 wks. Instead we changed her formula to SMA LF(lactose free as advised). It can take up to 6 wks for the gut to fully recover. Some children are fine on yoghurt and hard cheeses too. You could get a stool sample checked for 'reducing sugars' following negation of dairy to be sure.

That's ingestion not negation.
