Red splodges on chin after eating tomatoes

DS is nearly 2. In the last month or so, I've noticed that everytime he eats a tomato his chin goes red/flushed. Only his chin, no where else. It only lasts about half an hour at the most. I'm wondering if this is an allergy?

He's been eating tomatoes since he started on solids, so I'm not quite sure why this seems to happen now.

I was wondering if anyone knew.

DS2 had this too. He used to get very bad rashes when he ate tomato sauce as well. He grew out of it by the time he started school though and never had any other ill effects because of it.

It's a mild allergic reaction, you're seeing a histamine rash. Be careful my allergies can be like this and then I'll suddenly have a much worse reaction. Chemicals in foods are changed by cooking, which may be why cooked tomatoes are not a problem.

I'd keep him off them for a while and every six months or so challenge the allergy.

My DD had this too. She grew out of it. She had a worse one for kiwi fruit which we did avoid for a while, but she loved tomatoes so I just kept an eye on it and didn't see any worsening. Maybe ask GP for advice.

ds2 had this, but grew out of it by (I think) about age 3.

My two both had this (and reacted similarly to soy sauce and a couple of other things) but both grew out of it. Need to keep an eye on it, though, as it can progress to more serious allergic reactions.

It seems to be quite common then. Today his chin ( just the tip) was still a bit red by bedtime!
