5 year old Dd waking every night crying and complaining of itchy bum

please help.
5 year old dd2 has been waking every night around the same time crying saying she has an itchy bum and tummy ache. This has gone on for 3 or 4 nights.
I make sure she is clean after a poo and she has a bath every night before bed.
I have checked her poo but can't see anything.
She gets so upset and doesn't want me to look. I feel a bit helpless as mum of 3 never experienced this before.
Any advise please

Threadworms?

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 05/12/2011 23:25

Worms? I think you need to explain that you have to look.

I'd take her to doc to get her checked.

If you look with a torch when she's asleep if you can manage it you may be able to have a better look...

sounds like worms sorry! I know its a bit weird, but try waiting till shes asleep, then looking at her bum with a torch, if shes got worms theres a good chance that you will actually see them as they wait till the child is inactive to come out and start laying eggs, thats where the itchiness come from. I am mum of 3 and only experienced this for the first time about 8 months ago with my 8yr old. Medicine is very easy to get from chemist, 2 doses and you should be ok. think you have to treat everyone in the house if I remember rightly, and wash all bedding and try and keep her to one towel for a bit if possible. Dont worry though, easily sorted Xmas Smile

Threadworms? I seem to recall that they make you much itchier at night...I do think you'd be able to see if she'd let you look - if that's the problem. Quite easily treated but v easily spread, so separate towels for everyone in family etc.

2blessed2bstressed · 05/12/2011 23:29

Xposts with everyone else! Smile

orangina · 05/12/2011 23:29

Warning: it is REVOLTING when you do the night time torch check and you can see the little wrigglers though..... Xmas Shock

Tbh I'd give her some pripsen regardless of whether you see any. Then you can safely rule threadworms out f the symptoms continue.

Sounds exactly like my 4 year old DD, she woke at the same time every night, it distress crying about itchy bum. I gave her the worm medicine and it cleared up within 48 hours. The only thing that would actually aleviate the itching at the time was a bath.

WhoIsThatMaskedWoman · 05/12/2011 23:44

Yes I'd treat for threadworms anyway - family pack, wash sheets then again in 2weeks time.

I have NEVER checked a bum! I just have ovex on stand by (pripsen is disgusting) - there are some things that are too revolting to contemplate!

OldLadyKnowsSantaClaus · 06/12/2011 12:20

Oh, don't feel bad, it's just one of those things. Like headlice.

AnyoneForPimms · 06/12/2011 12:26

I think when you have kids you do anything for them.......now my husband?? No way!! lol

AnyoneForPimms - don't stress, in my family it was me that was waking during the night wondering what was going on! One night I 'inspected' and caught a little blighter. I was horrified. I nearly took the next day off work then pulled myself together, laughed it off with a few friends, who then said they're children had had them at some point too. It's extremely common and easy to resolve, and those who look down their nose will no doubt suffer at some point too! Glad it's sorted but I would also suggest short finger nails, good hand hygiene and agood scrub of your toilet for the next week or two too.

Metanium (very thick yellow gloopy nappy rash cream) is great for calming itchy butts. I think it is too thick for the worms to bore their way through, so they have to stay on the inside and sulk. Put pants on her over the top because it does stain (temporarily)

AnyoneForPimms · 06/12/2011 22:43

She woke once and I have put on a thick layer of sudacream.
