7yo son wets bed about once a week - help!

Hi, this is the first time I've posted on mumsnet, have come on for some advice about DS1 who is 7.6 and still wets the bed about once a week. He's a very heavy sleeper and only wakes to tell me he's wet the bed when it's all gone cold.
Is this normal? I thought they were supposed to have stopped bed wetting by the time they were 7? (or so the health visitor says...) Xmas Confused
He never drinks fizzy, or hot chocolate, or ribena. We stick to milk, water, apple or orange juice, occasionally robinsons summer fruits squash. I really don't want to medicate him for this, but can't see the point of alarms that only go off once the bed it wet?!
What else can I do? We stopped lifting him at age 6, which went well for a while, where he would be dry for two or three weeks at a stretch. Recently (last 2/3 months) the wet beds have increased to the current level of approx once a week. I would really appreciate advice from anyone in similar situation - I know sleepover parties can't be too far away now and I don't want him to be worried about going to a friends overnight because of this issue.......thankyou :)

My DS was also a very heavy sleeper and bedwetter. The alarm was useless for him, it woke me before him (and the other two dc in the room at the time!) There is a drug that helped but I was told that dc get used to it so it doesn't work, so he only used it on sleepovers. He eventually grew out of it aged about 9.

Try asking your GP, it's not unusual and s/he may be able to help.

Welcome to MN, by the way. :)

Can you pinpoint anything that happens on the day he pees?
Is he particularly tired and goes into a deep sleep?

From personal experience, some things upset different childrens' bladders.

My DD had a small portion of ice-cream yesterday about 3pm.She had a pee in the resturant. And in Sainsbo half an hour later. And back home. (All in the loo BTW )
How much water in ice-cream? But it makes her pee for Britain. [hconfused]

yes, if he's really tired he can wet the bed. Last night it happened again - he's a bit under the weather with a cold - do you think that has an effect?

His younger brother (3.9) has a bladder of steel, takes himself to the toilet in the night, and generally has developed physically much quicker than ds1. This is starting to worry ds1, and i'm wondering how much of it could be psychological?

We have only just managed to get dd ( just turned 8) dry at night which surprised me as she was dry in the day at 2!

My dd has still had the odd accident and i have noticed that it seems to be on a night that she seemed really tired. Do you leave a bathroom light on at night?
dd seems to have a problem with switching it on at night!.
