9mo rash any ideas? WWYD?

Hi there,

9mo DD was sent home from nursery Friday as they suspected conjunctivitis. I got the antibiotics from Boots, but the lady said, they only work on bacterial (green gloopy) conjunctivitis, not the viral (watery & red eyes only) kind. Nursery had also said she had a temperature.

So when we picked her up, no sign of green gloopy eyes, and no temperature, so I didn't use the ABs. Yesterday she as fine all day, and really in a lovely mood, didn't seem poorly. However, she has developed a rash. It's on her face, arms, a bit on her back and legs, and tummy, kind of everywhere, but not everywhere, IYSWIM.

It's not raised spots/blisters, it's just fine red marks under the skin, quite a lot of them.

I have done the glass test and it disappears under pressure.

If I was to hazard a guess I would say heat rash (but it's not hot and rash is not in typical places like neck, nappy area etc.), or maybe an allergy (but she's not had anything new to eat and n onew detergent/bath stuff or anything.

She's also a bit snotty at the moment (been back at nursery 3 months and has been snotty on and off since).

She's a bit whingey today, but I would otherwise not be worried.

WWYD? It seems to be a kind of random rash, but also snotty, temperature on Friday but not since.

Anyone had anything like this before?

It could be just a viral rash. Ds gets them regularly. His don't usually fade under pressure, which can cause an A&E trip but he's usually obviously just got a virus, which the blood test then proves. Sometimes he's had it spreading so fast you can actually watch them appearing.

Could be slapped face, dd1 had it just like you describe. She had it top of arms first and I thought she'd sunburnt, then it came out on her face, down her legs and lastly over the top of her back.

Yep viral rash or slapped cheek.

I wouldn't do anything so long as she isn't too 'ill'. You could give her calpol if she seems unhappy.

Waves to delia.

R had what sounds like a very similar rash on my second day back at work Hmm

I spoke to NHS Direct as she had a bit of a temperature too. They ruled out German Measles and as she was ok in herself nursery were happy to have her back. It faded after about 4 or 5 days,

I spoke to a few people at work and quite a lot of them said their DC's get a similar rash whenever they have a cold.

I would say viral rash (although we've not had experience of slapped cheek (yet!)). Some children seem more prone to rash than others - DD2 gets them frequently, DD1 not at all. Not a cause for concern if they are otherwise well.

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. Viral rash sounds spot on (I didn't know there was such a thing), as she really is in other respects fine, just a bit grumpy, but everything else, appetite, sleep etc. is fine, and with the cold as well, it is perfectly plausible that there is a virus that is making itself known in more ways than one. I suppose it could also be slapped cheek, although I had written it off as her cheeks are really not red, but obviously she can have it and not have very red cheeks, so it's a possibility.

Thanks again, it's really reassuring to know it is probably not serious. I'll keep my eye on it obviously, but as she's my first baby, I am as ever trying to tread the elusive fine line between neurotic hysteria and naive ignorance!
