Could this be an allergic reaction?

Have put a picture on my profile so that you can see, but my DD (4yo) has been unwell with a virus and I gave her the children's ibuprofen medicine for the first time last night, with no ill effects, and I gave her another dose his morning. Within half an hour her eye had a large white swelling underneath it, with red round the edges. The picture shows it when it first came up, but after another half hour or so it was twice as big - almost covering the whole socket line - and her eyelid was slightly swollen.

Could this have been an allergic reaction to the ibuprofen? I go her to hold a cold flannel on it and was all ready to take her to the Drs when it started to go down. Took around 4 hours to go completely, though.

Many thanks in advance.

It looks like a hive which would be an allergic reaction!! Prition is good for controlling reactions

Thanks! I was going to try piriton, but wasn't sure if I could give her some when she'd already had ibuprofen! I will keep her on Calpol, instead from now on!

I am not sure on the ingredients of piriton so i am thinking like you are, and your should be keeping her on calpol from now on. It may be worth exploring in the future as if there is an allergy in ibuprofen she would want to avoid it.

Thanks, again. My Dad is allergic to Asprin, so allergies are in the family. Next time I take her to the GPs I'll make sure I take the photo with me and ask them about it. I think if she was allergic to ibuprofen I'd want it on her records just in case!

Looks exactly like the hives that my DD got all over her legs and arms the other day after eating a lolly. GP prescribed Piriton and told me that a dose within 20 mins of the first sign of reaction will generally avert all but the most serious of allergic reactions.

I demanded patch testing as DH is very allergic too, it might be worth you doing the same especially as allergies are in your family. I was told I can get it but will take months to get an appointment so it might be worth you going to GP now especially as your DD is school age and may come into contact with other allergens. Also leave a bottle of Piriton with the school nurse just in case.

Thanks, ZhenXiang. She's had very small swellings like this once or twice before, always under her eyes, but I didn't really think much of them as she has never had any problems with foods or medicines before (or so I thought!). I put them down to her may be rubbing her eye or being tired. This was much bigger by far than the other times, though so I will make sure I take her to the GP once this virus has gone (don't want to infect others!).
