dd1 got headlice from school about 5 wks ago, was covered in them. I conditioned & combed every day & thought we had it sorted. Did the whole family including dd2 - 17mths. Then dd2 got chicken pox & her head was covered in spots so couldn;t do her hair but everyone else seemed rid of them. Now dd2 is recovered from chickenpox & the scabs on her head are almost better she is riddled with head lice & has now we all have them. I'm bribing her with sweets to sit still long enough for me to comb her hair. I can't use anything else on her scalp as she still has some scabs, is there any way of stopping this aother than to spend hours & hours combing?

I wonder if Full Marks would be OK while she's still scabby - its not an insecticide as such, its a sort of slippery silicone (I think) lotion which makes the buggers lose their grip. (Apparently its the same stuff as they put in infacol to degas colicky babies so presumably non toxic and not irritant)

Its what I used on DD when she had lice years ago and it worked very well.

Hedrin 4% is also dimethicone which is the silicone. Personally I am of the you have to use something to kill the buggers as it is too easy to miss a bit when combing.

Aaaaargh they are the Bane of my Life.
I get DD clear (with conditioner and Nitty Gritty) then next day she gets an adult or two (I know they are not from her, they wouldn't have had time to hatch and grow). So the whole thing starts again

One of the best things is mayonnaise.Just buy the cheapest stuff, smother it on and wrap the head with clingfilm.

It suffocates them, which is what alot of the non chemical treatments do, it contains vinegar which helps break the 'glue' and it's a good conditioner.

I might be lying here but I'm sure this was in advice from Trichologist Phillip Kingley IIRC

It won't irritate the scalp but it does smell a bit Grin

arrgghhh!! Can I join the frustrated parent club too? My DD has had them on and off since October and this is her third infestation, for want of a better word!

I got her clear a couple of weeks ago after I told the school that yet again I had to de-louse her. Cue the letter and hoped that would be it. But this morning noticed another nit so the poor thing has had to be de-loused again!

I use Full Marks lotion. However this time I noticed one or two lice still crawling! Not sure if it was because it was near the end of the bottle or quiet why. I left it on long enough :s

So in the morning, the teacher will be recieving another sarcastic note :D

We have had a lot of success with Hedrin, but I like the mayonnaise idea. Its the combing that's the worst thing when you have several children. They squeal, you bribe, then the bribe gets bigger... I know. I hate the little blighters but they seem to like my hair too. I was pleased that our local chemist gives you enough free Hedrin under the minor illness scheme to do everyone twice. I am seriously considering letting the girls go short but they have such lovely long hair.

I am pleased to hear I'm not the only one struggling with head lice, although not pleased for you all & your lo's! I may give the mayonnaise a try although god only knows what bride I will have to come up with to put it on dd1's hair! DD2 I am bribing with sweets while I comb her hair, she's still scratching even though I've not found anything the last few days, & she's rubbing her scalp til it's red & sore. Wondering if the head lice are irritating her or it's all the combing, think I'll take her to the health visitor & at least then may be able to get smoething free! I'm even more annoyed about them now though as I have them, haven't been straightening my hair much this last week & think they may have been doing the job on my part aseven though I was combing mine through apart from an occasional frazzled looking one didn't find anything but this week have found loads & been so itchy. Grrrrrrrrr
