DD has got to the grand old age of 10 months without need for a thermometer but she is now teething and sometimes it's difficult to tell when she's too warm rather than just warm IYSWIM.

Is it worth paying more for an in-ear thermometer or will a traditional stick-it-under-yer-tongue thermometer do the job just as well?

Are there any thermometers which tell you when child is too warm a bit like a nursery thermometer does?

All advice gratefully received.

I've got a proper in-ear digital one. A Braun thermoscan I think.

It's very good, and I've noticed that my GPs use it.

I sometimes take DS's temp when he's fine so that I have a rough idea where he is when he's well so that I can more accurately judge how much his has climbed anal about temperature.

In ear one. Worth every penny.

Is it like this one?

We have the braun thermoscan one.

Calpol one is shit.

ImpYCelyn · 29/11/2011 22:08

Yes, it is that one I have. It earned its keep this weekend!

I've tried several, the only decent one we've had is the braun one - our GP uses it too. My DC's get quite excited when they see it come out as they know there's a chance they'll be getting calpol shortly after (which they regard as a treat, weirdly Confused)

Thanks everyone. I'll get that one ordered then.

It's bad enough wondering why DD is off her food, spotty, miserable, not sleeping etc without wondering if the back of my hand is a reliable gauge of temperature. Let's hope she sleeps for more than 90 minutes at a time tonight < tired mommy emoticon >

I hope your little ones are ok now ImpYCelyn.

On the mend thanks :)

I hope your DD picks up soon.

DS had a genetically based fever syndrome and I swear by the brauns.

but I also carried in my bag/everywhere a really basic forehead thermometer which i might even have got from a mother and baby magazine or picked up in bots/superdrug - the sort that is just a strip of plastic that changes colour. It was really useful too to have on hand.

hope your dd is better soon

Nurofen one - shite
Calpol one - shite

Got a 'Brannan' one from our local chemist that seems to have been pretty much as accurate as the doc's.

Also, a simple digital under the arm one has been reliably accurate for us over the years.

Braun Thermoscan without a doubt. DS was horribly prone to tonsilitis as a younger child, and still gets it two or three times a year, we've always found it dead easy to use and very accurate.
