differences between coeliac disease and ulcerative colitis

Can anyone tell me the differences between the two conditions? As explained in my previous post last night, we are officially waiting for a biopsy re coeliac disease for DS1 aged 3.5years. However, since finding blood in his stool last week, the registrar we spoke to for advice said he would discuss doing a colonoscopy as well. My MIL has ulcerative colitis (no idea whether this is relevant?) and DH also has all the same problems that DS1 has. His coeliac blood screen has come back negative (as has DS1's, at less than 1). The GP has refused to progress DH's case any further and when they are both on a gluten and dairy free diet (with no onions, soya, foods with hard shells (such as butterbeans) etc..) they are relatively symptom-free. Personally, I think that if we are putting DS1 under a GA we may as well check out both ends at once, now that we've had blood in his stool. Would appreciate any advice from others though as it's all a bit of a maze to navigate our way through at the moment, with a very poorly little boy Sad.

Well as a coeliac myself and having had both endoscopy and colonoscopy as part of the diagnostic process YANBU for wanting to have both 'ends' checked.

Coeliac is a condition caused by an intolerance to gluten that affects the upper (small intestine) part of the bowel and ulcerative colitis is an inflamatory condition that affects the lower (colon) part of the bowel.

Hi, My DS had loose, mucous stools with blood in it, from when he was born. Also vomiting and gagging all the time. Lost so much weight He was diagnosed with a condition called autoimmune enteropathy. He was put on a strict wheat, egg, milk, soya, and rye free diet. I would advise you to get a scope, biopsies and whatever you want tested now. It's not nice to put children through that over and over again.
Is he under the Gastro team, or just a GP?Get him referred to a Gastro specialist.
The doctors never listened to us, kept saying he's just a sick baby, making excuses for everything. Get him admitted to a specialist hospital to get checked out properly. Doctors don't do anything untill it's too late.
Hope all the best for your DS.

Thanks to you both for replying. He is booked in for a biopsy at Birmingham Children's Hospital just before the end of the year. Hopefully, having seen blood in the stool, it will be a little earlier than that. We are pushing them as hard as we can as he has been back on gluten now for 11 weeks and it was only necessary to do 6 weeksSad.

Keep persisting hopefully they will book him in sooner.
Is he under a Gastro Specialist?

Thanks. He is under a gastro specialist now as our local hospital don't do biopsies on kids, hence the referral to BCH.
