some homeophaths/ natural healers don't seem to do that, though.

TheParanoidAndroid · 30/01/2012 10:09

what is a good homeopath though? Any one of them who thinks they are actually treating you for anything must be pretty dimwitted and unable to grasp basic physical laws of the universe. And anyone who can understand such simple concepts is therefore lying to you and cheating you.

Am confused as to what a "good homepath" could possibly consist of? Confused

Simon Singh, one of the authors of 'Trick or treatment', carried out an experiment in 2006 where he had a student pretend to be about to travel to West Africa for 10 weeks, though an area with a high risk of Malaria. The student went to 10 homeopaths, to ask if there were alternatives to conventional anti-malarials as she had had side-effects in the past. All ten recommended she take homeopathic protection instead of conventional anti-malarials. Therefore they were happy to send someout out to where there is a high chance of catching malaria, with no protection whatsoever. Malaria is a very serious illness and can be fatal. (You can read about this in an extract of the book here (page 228))

This is what the dangers of homeopathy are. If you have a cold, fine, take a sugar pill and watch while your cold gets better on its own, but please, for anything serious, consult a real doctor. When homeopaths advise you to abandon conventional medicine, a huge amount of damage can be done.

And yes, PoptartPoptart, the placebo effect can occur in children. Presumably you have given your son medicine in the past (calpol etc) which would have relieved his symptoms, so the association is there so that when you give him medicine, he expects an improvement. All at the subconcious level, but the subconcious can be very powerful.

Please don't think I'm criticising you personally when I criticise homoepathy. Homepaths can be very convincing and generally believe what they are claiming. And it's very easy to mistake a combination of the placebo effect and the body's natural defense system for a remedy actually working.

We have to remember that any anecdotes we hear about homeopathy working are just that, anecdotes, and if there was any truth behind the claims of homeopathy, there would be scientific studies consistantly showing positive results. And there simply aren't any.

"And there was I thinking it was because the h2o was G&T."

Well of course at some time in its history, the H2O would have been gin and tonic (Grin). So seeing as magic memory water will remember being gin and tonic, just think of the savings!

Of course it will remember being many other things too, which it will be best not to think about ever again.

I'm in the market for a Sikh Pope and a claustrophobic, constipated bear with a pine allergy. This seems like the thread for me!

Biscuit
bruxeur · 30/01/2012 11:47

I hope that's a homeopathic biscuit - has it been dunked 9,000,000 times?

seeker · 30/01/2012 12:18

No' the biscuit has just been broken into 1,000,000 pieces. Each piece is more intensely buiscuity and gives you a much better biscuit experience than a whole one........

TheParanoidAndroid · 30/01/2012 12:28

Indeed the memory of a biscuit is far stronger than an actual biscuit could ever be!

seeker · 30/01/2012 12:30

Maybe the water in the tea remembers the biscuits dunked in it in the past?

Fenouille · 31/01/2012 19:57

I meant g&t in the 'gifted and talented' sense One Hand, but you have a point - I could save a fortune on alcohol and just drink water with an alcoholic memory

Winny, there was a very interesting programme on W9 about Boiron (the main manufacturer of homeopathic medicine sugar pills in France. It was Shock and Hmm in equal measure (until then I'd thought it was a small, almost cottage, industry). It showed a company exploiting the French health service (sugar pills are free on prescription in France) and the gullibility of the French public - their best seller is a 'natural' flu vaccine Hmm They filmed pharmacists telling members of the public that it was a good substitute for the real flu vaccine don't get me started on the typical Frenchman's attitude to inoculations [why isn't there a 'banging your head against a brick wall' emoticon?] My respect for (French) pharmacists has gone right down since seeing that programme and the brain meltingly stupid convos I've had with my local ones.

I wanted to comment on Dr Jacobs at Verwood. I have been suffering from constant bad stomachs for over 25 years after visiting India. I contracted Giardia a parasite, had treatment when I returned home to U.k. But my stomach was always upset and painfull especially after eating . I heard about Dr Jacobs from a lady who had been suffering from Chrons for 10 years. The good Dr. had resolved all her symptoms after just 6 months treatment. My stomach improved 80% after 6 weeks of treatment from Dr Jacobs. And has ben perfect after 3 months treatment. I don't even think about my stomach anymore. Dr Jacobs is a very knowledgable person and I highly recommend him .

narmada · 03/05/2013 21:07

adi63 a 5 day course of metronidazole would have likely fixed your giardiasis 37 days sooner than your 'good Dr'. And likely if you had not gone to said quack homeopath your giardia would have resolved in 6-8 weeks as that is the normal course of the infection.

Adi63 · 26/05/2013 19:25

The Giardia I contracted was treated successfully by the tropical diseases hospital on my return from India. Unfortunately, my stomach remained sore and painful for 25 years, despite the Giardia being killed off. I have seen many medics, specialists and supposed experts on stomachs! All failed to resolve my problem. Dr Jacobs has completely resolved my stomach. What a relief to wake up with no discomfort or any pain after eating. Incidentally, the lady who had been suffering crohn's disease for 10 years had previously paid to see a professor of medicine who was an internationally recognised expert on crohn's. He could only offer her more steroids, which didn't work. The lady had been bed bound for 4 months, had to stop working and was extremely ill. Since seeing Dr Jacobs, she has been completely symptom free and has returned to work. This guy is the real deal and I am so glad I travelled to see him. He offers much hope and a safe, natural treatment for those suffering poor health. I sure the good Dr. would say he can't fix everyone, but he certainly fixed me!
