Hi,i know there are many of you who have experienced this so i thought id ask. Baby had her soft palate repair on Wednesday and has seemed ok since as long as she has her calpol regularly. Today tho, i though it seemed to be troubling her more and she needed the ibruprofen as well. She cried a fair bit as her meds wore off and also seems to be coughing a bit.Anyone remember if it does get more painfull around now?

I think if you're in any doubt then you need to call NHS direct or see the doctor....I am sure it's fine but she has just had surgery and its a delicate area so you need to rule out infection. Best be sure early on and then you can relax. Smile

Get well soon baby Ledkr.

Yes I agree that you need to get some professional advice. I would ring the ward where your DD had her operation. You should have been given a number to ring in case of problems.

BUT my DS had his tonsils out a few weeks ago and we were told to expect the pain to suddenly get much worse around day 4/5 as that is when nerve endings start growing back. And it did get much worse for a couple of days, then quickly got much better. So it may be that - but you must get it checked out in case of infection, especially with such a young baby.

My god-daughter had her cleft lip and palate repaired a few weeks ago and her Mum had a similar experience. She spoke to the specialist nurse who said that on day 5/6 the stitches start to dissolve which can cause some discomfort as it makes the tissue shift around a bit after it's been settled for a few days. So your daughter could be experiencing something similar? If you're concerned it might be worth giving the ward a call though.

I just got this info from Great Ormond Street Website...it says that concern should be when the child gets irritable or a temp among other things...have a read its very informative.

My wee boy had his cleft repaired this time last year, and although I don't specifically remember his being in any more pain around day 4/5 I did keep up with the calpol/ibruprofen maximum doses for about 10 days. He didn't seem to like his bottle for about a fortnight and just lived on yoghurt!

If you are worried, just phone the cleft nurse, or the ward from which you were discharged. There is also a great CLAPA facebook page where there are loads of people who can give advice/experience.
Hope she (and you) are doing well

ledkr · 22/11/2011 22:23

Thanks. She's been a bit better today,im sure she's got a cold though too. She defo needs the pain relief for sure.
Eating is a bit hit and miss but she seems to enjoy lunch and is ok with her bottles.
How is your little boy now?

Hi Ledkr, glad to hear the op went well, we found the first two weeks quite difficult and our ds was on the meds for that time. All I can suggest is to keep the medication up and that your dd has it as regularly. I always felt that my ds found the repair felt 'strange' iykwim! It's a difficult one cos I've heard lots of people say that their dcs were fine with the op and others like our ds who struggled a bit.

Listen, around if you want a chat or want to know anything else x

DS2 (18months so not so wee now!) is doing really well. We were really worried initially as he still seemed to be having food out of his nose for a couple of weeks post operation, but the surgeon reassured us (I phoned her -overworried mum that I am) that the palate would tighten up as it healed and she was right. Meal times are a whole lot better now - apart from the food throwing, but that's a whole other thread Grin

He has had a few hearing problems, but so far his speech seems to be on track. Got his first speech therapy appt in the new year so will find out more then.

Hope your little girl feels a bit less sore soon. Has she got cracks at the corners of her mouth from it being open for so long during the op? DS2 seemed to be really distressed by those, lots of vaseline seemed to help, and they cleared up in about a week I think
