My 6 month old has been in contact this morning with a 2 year old who has come out in spots this afternoon. I have a few qns

  1. How long would it take for my babys spots to show presuming she caught it?
  2. DD1 has had chicken pox a few years ago but could she be a "carrier". My mum hasnt had chicken pox so could DD1 pass DD2s chicken pox onto her?
  3. Can someone who has had chicken pox get shingles from her?

Thanks

Its usually 21 day from infection until the spots show. I've never heard of anyone being a carrier. I'm pretty sure you need direct contant via droplet infection to pass it on. Sjingles is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus but usually only happens if the person is very run down.

Hope this helps

Hello!Q1 in my personal experience it was 14 days from spots on DD1 til DD2 and me got spots! Both kids were fine - just a few spots and no illness as such - I was a wreck with spots every where. Think it says 10 - 21 days incubation period in medical books
Q2 Do not think this is possible - never heard of this ever
Q3 Shingles is a flare up of the chicken pox virus in someone who's already had it already albeit lying dormant - so no she won't give any one shingles However I have read that some one with shingles could pass on the virus to a non immune person which could possibly give them chicken pox.

Thanks for the responses. V. helpful. Anybody know if its true that babies under 6 months are not likely to get it because they have their mothers immunity. I should point out that I am not breast feeding.

The incubation period is 10 to 21 days. Ds got it about 14 days after Dd. You can't get shingles from chicken pox and I wouldn't have thought you could pass chicken pox on unless you currently had it and were at the infectious stage. (1-2 days before the spots appear until they scab over)

My Ds got it at 5 1/2 months but was bottle fed. He went on to get childhood shingles at age 3 which is apparently more common if they get chicken pox under 1 year.

Shingles is really nasty isnt it?

Babies do have some immunity from their mothers even if they don't bf but not sure how long and shingles can be mild or nasty in varying degrees!! My old mam used to say Que sera sera - What ever will be will be!! So its a wait and see situation with your baby to see if she has chicken pox!! Just maybe keep her away from pregnant ladies as I hear it can cause problems.
