5 year old in so much pain from toothache

Anyone had any similar experience/advice. My daughter has had so much pain on one of her teeth, not eating, low spirits etc.... the doctor removed the filling, cleaned out decay that was going down to the nerve, refilled it. But now it's infected so I went back and he's put her on another course of anti-biotics and scheduled her in to take out the tooth under a local anaesthetic? Seems so much for a 5 year old to endure. Anyone got any reassuring experiences of child tooth extraction?!?
I'm also a single working mum, and worried about how much time I'll need to take off work (lose pay if I don't work).
Thank you for reading.

poor thing! my son had a couple of teeth extracted at the same age. he was sedated and it took just minutes. he was back to normal within an hour or so.

Oh really, that's good to hear. Was it at a hospital or dentist? Did you have to wait long between when pain started and getting it extracted? How did they sedate? So many questions!!

Poor love. There is nowt worse than tooth ache. DD had 4 out under general, as they weren't growing properly, she was 8 I think. We had to get the train up to Guys in London, about 40mins away for the op. Within an hour of having them out, we were back on the train and had to stop for food on the way home! Grin She was back at school the next day.

Have you got plenty of medicine for her. Doing the Neurofen/Paracetamol two hourly?

Didi6 · 18/11/2011 21:30

Yes I have the nurofen, but am worried she's having too much of it (they say shouldn't really take more than 3 days in a row) plus the anti-biotics.

Guess I'm just going to be a stressed out, worried Mum until Thursday! Just hate not being able to feed her properly and take the pain away permantly!

The dentist also said if it gets really bad then to take her to A& E. What constitutes really bad?!

he went to a specialist dental practice and was out for only a little while.

As far as I know the 3 day rule is don't use it without consulting a doctor - as in don't use it without finding out the cause.

You know the cause so I wouldn't worry about that. Just give 3 hourly with calpol alternating up the 24 hour max doses.

I would say really bad is if she is still in considerable pain despite max doses or if she gets a fever or if she isn't eating at all or sleeping.

Get some clove oil and apply it to the painful tooth and those around it. Really, it's one of those things (like egg white for nappy rash), that science has yet to improve on.
