Failed hearing test for first time - age 6

Hi - DD1 has just been sent home with a failed hearing test letter - no details at all just retest in 2 months.

I am pretty sure she had one in Reception (now in year 1) and she passed. She did have fairly frequent ear infections up to age of about 4 but all fine since then and surely if there had been any lasting damage there would have been a problem with the test last year? She didn't have a cold last week or anything that could really account for this.

Any experiences with this? I have called an left a message at the Health Visitors office on the letter but of course its an ansa machine and they havent called me back yet. From what i can understand they then refer if they fail a 2nd time? Bit worried and this is a bolt from the blue and i just wish they would communicate better!

thanks

Don't worry. Ds "failed" his hearing test - did another at the audiology clinic and his results were perfectly normal. It happens.

thanks Bradbourne:-) . Hope thats the case. I have made an appt for her with GP week after next so that she can at least check if there is a wax build up or something? DD is going through a not listening phase but i have to say i think it is more 'selective' hearing than an inability to hear. Hope so anyway.

I just cant believe they just send this letter our with no explaination.

Can anyone just confirm that they always do the tests at beg of Reception as well? I am 99% sure i remember it but would like to be sure that i am not imagining that she had one (and passed) at that point.

thank

Myabe it depends on your health authority. Ds had one at preschool (I think) then another towrds the end of reception. (And, of course, once he "failed" I started looking for indications that he might have hearing difficulties...)

THanks. I am now questionning whether I am wrong as she didnt have one as can only find results for vision. And I can't see why they would screen everyone in Reception and then again in Year 1?

Health team haven't return my calls and school seem unable to confirm if reception had hearing tests or not last year!

I'm getting stressed about it and its just so bad to be sending letters out and then refusing to respond to phone calls.

Well it appears not test last year, just vision :-( Still can't get any info beyond 'fail' :-(

Try not to worry, I failed my hearing test at my pre- employment medical a few years ago. Had another one and passed with flying colours! I think I just was not listening properly!

Also DS failed his at school - we went to the GP and he had a big build up of wax in one ear. It was easily removed in the surgery and his hearing is 100% now.

Can you get another test done for reassurance or see your GP?

Update - eventually spoke to school nurse and was told she had failed on a middle frequency in one ear (retried 3x). Went to the gp today and no wax or sign of glue ear. She did agree that middle frequency is a bit odd as usually they lose high or low rather than middle and said it is quite possible it was just the noise, but it does seem odd to me as they did it 3x. Will just have to wait til retest in Jan and hope it is ok then :-(
