Baby being sick, what shall I do?

My 9mth old DD has vomited 5 times since 7pm, she is drinking water and breastfeeding but everytime she does she brings it straight back up. She is sleeping now but every so often she wakes to be sick. She is pale but otherwise ok, no tempreture.

I'm just wondering at what stage do I worry about her becoming dehydrated? Do I keep offering fluids even though they seem to make her throw up? My kids don't get ill very often so when they do I panic a bit!

Call Nhs direct for advice tel 0845 4647. Hope she feels better soon.

Yes, I have phoned them for advice but I'm still waiting for them to call back. I've been online to check symptoms too. I'm quite an anxious mum when they are ill which is rare thankfully. I always imagine the worst.

Poor DD and poor you!

Sounds like a vomiting bug to me, DS had one at a similar age and I did what you are doing and just kept breastfeeding and offering water (this was advice from nurse at NHS direct).
I think in this situation breastmilk is ideal as it's easily absorbed and comforting for them too.

You could be in for a pukey night (I hope not) and if you are worried NHS direct is there 24 hours / day on the end of the phone.

FWIW we found a stash of towelling robes and pile of towels for vomit containment invaluable.

Hope your DD is better very soon.

Cheers Lake, sounds like good advice! We've already changed the bed twice, her vests and pyjamas 3 times and shes had a bath cos the 1st time caked her in vomit. She has vomited over herself again but I cant bring myself to bathe her at this time of night so I've just wiped her dry and changed her pyjamas again. Poor little thing. Not looking forward to the night ahead! Towels at the ready!. I hope DS doesn't come down with it too. Smile

NHS direct is hopeless for that I've found. They seem to automatically tell you to get them checked out in A & E... if they phone you back in reasonable time... thinking of the time they took 6+ hours to phone back with dd1 age 11 months when the symptoms I gave to the triage could (I knew weren't) have been meningitis. Hmm

If her temperature is fine and she's producing some wet nappies then I wouldn't worry. Offer fluids 5mm (syringe works best) every 5 minutes either bm or water, or give her bf when she wants, (which is what I always did). If she throws it straight back up, then try with the water a couple of minutes later.

If she's throwing up the 5mm at a time, then you need to go to A&E.
