Paranoid! Should I go back to GP?

Ds is 6 months old. Quite a big boy ( over 21lb) has cows milk protein intolerance.

10 days ago he started getting poorly. By Sunday he was worse and breathing very loud. Noticed his chest caving in around ribs when breathing so took him hospital who diagnosed bhronciolitis and prescribed saline for nose and spray for throat. His appetite was small but he was still drinking about 20oz milk a day. Took him back to GP Wednesday as breathing still loud and he had stopped taking milk. Doc diagnosed secondary infection and gave anti biotics.

Today is day 2 of antibiotics. His breathing is still loud but he is sleeping more. What worries me is his food intake. Today he has had 2 small pouches of fruit puree and 3oz of milk about 6oz of water.

He isn't unhappy as such. He is clingy and drowsy with waves of smiles and talking but not himself.

Should I worry about food and milk if he is taking water??? How longshould I wait before worrying more????

Tia

Thing is I can't give him yoghurts etc to make up the lack of milk!

Think about it.

If you were ill, would you want to eat?

Nope.

Leave him be for now, make sure he is getting water, if he deteriorates go back.

Thanks. The mothers rational intuition says he is poorly and he will eat when he feels like it but the paranoid anxious mummy is worried he isn't recovering !

Look, you are clearly worried. Go back tomorrow, no point in you fretting, it won't do the baby any good at all.

Only 9oz of fluid (and what is in the pouches?) I would take him back go get checked over.

Go back. The doctor won't mind checking him. Heck, when 8 year old dd1 had pneumonia they wanted to check her every day, and if there was no improvement in the morning, they came to see her in the afternoon too.

Better you see the doctor today than end up needing A&E or even out of hours at the weekend.

Bronchiolitis can be quite dangerous and, if he really has a secondary infection on top of viral bronchiolitis, maybe he should be being monitored in a hospital setting. I have copied and pasted below how to know if your child is in respiratory distress. The problem with even mild respiratory distress is that it is very tiring to a baby, which is probably why he is drowsy and losing his appetite. It is far better to have some oxygen or other assistance to give the poor baby a break.

At 6 months, I do not know whether he can roll over but babies breathe a little better on their stomachs. If you can keep an eye on him during his daytime nap, I would allow him to nap on his tummy. Clearly, if he is not being monitored, you should stick to the normal advice.

Signs of Respiratory Distress

Signs of breathing difficulty to look out for include:

?grunting noise when your child breathes
?flaring of the nostrils as your child breathes
?the trachea pulling in as your child breathes (look at the soft spot above the breast-bone)
?the ribs looking more prominent as your child breathes
?the abdomen (tummy) pushing out as your child breathes out
?lips looking blue or dusky in color
?wheeze (a whistling noise as your child breathes out)
?stridor (a whistling noise as your child breathes in)
?breathless or sweating with feeding in a baby

bonkerz how is your ds now?

Thanks guys. I admit I'm a paranoid mumBlush you wouldn't think this was my third child!!!!!!

Yesterday was a much better day. He seemed to get his appetite back and ate quite alot of fruit and veg and had about 15oz of milk too. Last night he woke every four hours and drained his bottles so I think he is going to be making up for being ill!!!!!!
