14 yo DD- fainting with loss of bladder control during faint

Has anybody experienced this? My instincts tell me it's not normal to wet oneself during a "normal" faint.

Epilepsy sprang to mind but I'm not a dr! It doesn't sound normal though have you spoken to a GP?

It is normal but regular fainting needs checking out.

Also not a dr, but do have epilepsy and know that loss of bladder control is a side effect and that not all seizures are the shaking all the floor type seen on Casualty!

I've never had loss of bladder control during a faint, and I'm a fainter.

This used to happen to me as a child and teenager, I used to faint fairly regularly if I had a minor injury (fortunately never had any major ones) and often wet myself, it was mortifying. I can't remember what tests etc I had but do remember that the conclusion was that it was nothing to worry about and I would grow out of it. They were right; the last time it happened was when I was 17.

I've fainted reasonably regularly throughout my life due to low blood pressure. Only time I lost bladder control was when I had blood clots on my lungs. Obviously your dd wont have this as she would have other symptoms but it needs checking out IMO.

It is only twice in the last 6 months, once about a month before her periods started, but she did it again just this evening at supper- happy and talking one moment, keeled over sideways the next, and totally wet herself, poor thing. She was way more embarrassed about that than bothered about fainting. The thing is that my mother has epilepsy and I'm always slightly hyper-aware of that.

I think I will take her to the doctor.

Yes definately one for the GP. Just to put your mind at rest if nothing else. Have you let school know? You really need to in case it happens there. You don't want them to either over or under react.

Definitely worth going to GP. Having said it used to happen to me, it was never out of the blue like that, only in response to pain.

Vasovagal syncope..............often misdiagnosed as epilepsy...............

I was also going to suggest vasovagal syncope as it is something I have the pleasure of experiencing. I haven't wet myself whilst fainting (yet) but I do vomit whilst unconscious and thrash about as if I am having a fit (sooo attractive!). When I was 14 or 15 I had a phase of regular fainting but there was never Any reason for it decided.

I actually started to go into a vomit/faint this morning following a sudden bout of diarrhoea (again, I'm so attractive!) but managed to avoid it by lying down flat and trying to calm my breathing.

I hope she's ok. It's horrible to have this at any time, but particularly when you're in your teens - I remember the mortification of having to lie down on the pavement when I felt it starting to happen when out with my pals!

This sounds like epilepsy to me. Loss of bladder control was a diagnostic factor in me being diagnosed with epilepsy at roughly the same age. Sorry.

It is normal to have urinary incontinence during a faint. There is an article here that may be of interest.

My first thought was epilesy. No healthy 14 yr should faint without cause. Please take her to your gp.

Urinary incontinence is very common during a faint and fainting is more common in teenagers. My DD used to do it quite regularly as did I. Possibly a good idea to get her checked out particularly with your family history but no need to panic.
