Shingles - any tips?

My daughter has shingles.
She is feeling intermittent pain (seems to be getting worse). Spots appeared on Tuesday night, and seem to be evolving into blisters. She is very tired, and is starting to squirm with discomfort.

Any tips on how to get through it, and an idea as to hoe long the symptoms may last would be helpful.

I didnt even know children could get shingles. Hmm

ds lasted just over a week and we used nurofen and Piriton iirc. Maybe one of the antihistamines would help , Eurax? or Piriton. Since ds had it 2+ years ago aged 11 I've known at least 2 younger kids have it, so not that uncommon, and they have 10% chance of getting it again..

what age is she? Ds had it when he was 3 but was first misdiagnosed with eczema and given cream to rub on (ouch!!). Piriton and pain killers (paracetamol and/or ibuprofen can help). It lasts about the same time as chicken pox (as it is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus).

Thanks for responding.

She is 7.

I am giving her calpol/nurofen, and I've just been out and bought piriton and calamine cream.

I am currently feeling completely helpless as she sobs with pain :(

Poor little love Sad

I had it last year, not fun for adults - horrid for kids (though they tend to get it more mildly). My friend's ds had it, but so mildly he hardly noticed (aged 2).

Is she on antivirals? I was, as was friend's ds, and am sure they helped. Might be too late to make a difference now though.

If she's in too much pain, do ask your GP for something stronger for her - its only for a week or two, and adults are usually given codydramol or at least co-codamol.

cool baths helped dd but it is not the best time of the year for that. I had zink cream to put on the rashes and painkillers. It wasn't nice for her.

Thanks - I have been to the OOH GP who has prescribed antivirals which she has just started taking. She is much calmer now so perhaps the painkiller sare starting to help.

Elibean - I know you under another name. Come find the AN thread ;)

We were told that a-v's weren't of any use once the rash had appeared Confused

I was told if you start antivirals within 72 hours of the rash appearing it can reduce pain and shorten the virus. She seems brighter today. :)
