DS has started walking oddly

This is going to sound really weird.

My 20 month old DS was Playing in the park this afternoon & he suddenly fell over 7/8 times in a row. He wasn't tripping on anything, it was like he couldn't walk properly.

It's now a couple of hours later, and he's just had a nap, and is walking really oddly. He's almost limping, and he's walking like he would be if his right leg/foot was hurting him.

I've poked & prodded both his legs & feet and it doesn't seem to bother him at all.

Am worrying about absolutely nothing, or could there be an explanation?

Sorry for the ramble, I don't think this post makes much sense!

Sounds like he's hurt something. Best get him checked out/ x rayed? Is anything obviously red or swollen ? Did he cry? Is he showing any signs of being in pain or walking oddly,as if he is trying to avoid putting pressure on a part of his foot ?

ShirleyKnot · 17/11/2011 16:27

I'd get him checked out.

SpanglyGiraffe · 17/11/2011 18:16

Thankyou for the replies.

He's pointed at his foot once & said "ow" but his walking seems to have improved. There's no redness or swelling.

Exp's DM has just come over, and she seemed to think it might due to him recently having a couple of ear infections. She thinks it might be affecting his balance?

I'm not sure how likely that is, but if it was the case then would def get him checked as it sounds like the infections are affecting middle ear. More likely a sprain or something. See how he is, but my nephew age 1 broke his foot coming down a slide and he wasn't obviously bruised or swollen, just couldn't weight bare and crying on and off. His mum just thought it really wasn't like him and took him to get an xray...we thought she might be overreacting, but she was right!

If you wait a bit and bump, someone medical will come along...

DeWe · 17/11/2011 19:05

I'd go to A & E with that. It could just be a soft tissue damage (Ds had that at about that age, and it took several weeks to clear) but there are also viruses that can have that sort of result. There was no external damage with ds either. He just stepped off a step in the garden and we wouldn't have noticed if he'd be able to walk afterwards.

Ds has had lots of ear infection and it is as though he is slightly clumsier than usual (even with a bad infection) and falls over more, but it wouldn't make him limp. I really don't think that is very likely, particularly as you have identified which side seems to be the problem.

"He's pointed at his foot once & said "ow" but his walking seems to have improved."

FWIW, a broken ankle can hurt less than a sprain.

Yes I have.

KickArseQueen · 17/11/2011 19:10

Agreeing with Piglet, I would get him checked out.

SpanglyGiraffe · 17/11/2011 19:36

I've just rung the OOH doctor And am waiting for a call back. She was a really snotty cow who made me feel like I shouldn't be bothering them. I hate it when they do that Sad

Sounds nasty piglet!

Ignore her attitude, you have just spoken to Mrs Raven <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=mrs+raven&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=685&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=SiUm9L64CtrZsM:&imgrefurl=uni.benargo.com/1/introduction-to-the-web/charity/privacy.php&docid=edX2qcHZ2bGWFM&imgurl=assets.benargo.com/images/uni/raven.jpg&w=160&h=177&ei=t2LFTp34Hsvn8QPR6YSyCw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=203&vpy=216&dur=92&hovh=141&hovw=128&tx=103&ty=62&sig=114071333280448169285&page=1&tbnh=141&tbnw=126&start=0&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=mrs+raven&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=685&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=SiUm9L64CtrZsM:&imgrefurl=uni.benargo.com/1/introduction-to-the-web/charity/privacy.php&docid=edX2qcHZ2bGWFM&imgurl=assets.benargo.com/images/uni/raven.jpg&w=160&h=177&ei=t2LFTp34Hsvn8QPR6YSyCw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=203&vpy=216&dur=92&hovh=141&hovw=128&tx=103&ty=62&sig=114071333280448169285&page=1&tbnh=141&tbnw=126&start=0&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0 We have 3 of them at our surgery. She doesn't have xray vision and you know your child best, just keep that firmly in mind!!

fannybaws · 17/11/2011 19:48

I would go to a&e with that, small children can break bones quite easily and it can be hard to spot.

KickArseQueen · 17/11/2011 20:47

I agree with fanny. Hope he's ok.

SpanglyGiraffe · 17/11/2011 21:56

Just got back from the doctors & he said he probably did sprain it, but it's much better already.

He checked his ears too & he's got lots of fluid behind each eardrum, which is probably why he fell in the first place!

Thankyou all of you Smile

Grin kickarse.
