What is best treatment for nappy rash?

CinnamonStar · 16/11/2011 08:14

Little DD, 5 months, is teething at the moment, and has horrendous nappy rash - big raised red patches.

I have been changing frequently, giving nappy free time, and smearing on a free sample of weleda calendula nappy cream, which has now run out.

It seems like a good cream, but are there better ones out there? (it is v expensive, but obvioulsy I will buy it if it is the best).

And is there anything else I can do to make her more comfy?

Wait for the bottom to be completely dry after a nappy change and then a layer of sudocrem... Repeat every nappy change always ensuring the bottom is dry before the sudocrem goes on.

open air time as much as possible. wash with water rather than use wipes pat dry.
i also wouldnt use creams if you are then putting a disposable nappy on as they tend to stop them absorbing fluids, so you are actually making them work less well. but if you are using real nappies, then slather away.

Wolfiefan · 16/11/2011 08:34

Have used both metanium (smells v strong and bright yellow) and bepanthan (seems to really soothe the skin) on mine. Sudacrem may work a treat but not for the really awful bits. (Fab on burnt skin though!)

Metanium.
Most peole agree that it is fab.

stripygiraffe · 16/11/2011 09:34

Absolutely metanium. It's amazing!

CinnamonStar · 16/11/2011 12:37

Thanks! Local chemist doesn't have metanium, but my friend has a tube and says I can borrow it until rash clears up.

Thanks for the other tips - I do use washables (although was considering switching while she is so sore, but not sure it would actually help...)
I'll make sure to wash with water, do most of the time but sometimes wipes are easier.

Another vote for metanium - really is a miracle worker - but do put a thin layer on rather than salvering it on. (Can't remember why, but HV said it was more effective that way).

Lot of naked bottom time. A friend of mine always swore by using a hairdryer on low for a short while to dry out the bottom region after a nappy change. Never tried personally - but might be worth a shot?!

LillianGish · 16/11/2011 12:55

Leave her nappy off as much as possible to allow it to clear up - obviously creams are good if you have to put the nappy back on, but nothing works as well as letting the air get to it.

Graciescotland · 16/11/2011 12:58

Naked bottom time and make sure she's completely dry after every nappy change. Ikea do 15p hand towels that I cut into six facecloth sized pieces to do bottom washing/drying.

Wipes sting if your skin is irritated so do try and use water also a little coat of olive oil during bare bottom time to help soothe.

DS had shocking nappy rash when he was in hospital for an op, so they called a dermatologist in.
Her recommendations - clean with water only, tiny spot of baby bath stuff in it only if absolutely necessary. Dry thoroughly - if the child will stand it, use a hairdryer.
put on the cream and then use hairdryer to dry that too.

If a prescribed cream is used, do as above and then put a layer of metanium over the top; helps stop the prescribed cream being washed away at the first wee.

my dd really suffered with nappy rash whilst teething. Got to the stage she was bleeding, was horrible. Best thing I ever came across was honey dabbed on to the sore spots, and camomile tea (cooled) used to wipe. If you can find camomile and honey tea bags...perfect. I made some up and put in a spray bottle for when we were out and about. Sounds a bit crackpot but really cleared things up quickly. hth

metanium metanium metanium metanium metanium metanium

BreeVanDerTramp · 17/11/2011 10:44

Another vote for metanium. DS2 (14 months) had terrible nappy rash last week with teething, I sat him in a lukewarm bath a couple of times a day to take the heat out of it (no product just water) and changed from Pampers to those eco nappies you get in Boots which cleared it up within a day.

CinnamonStar · 17/11/2011 13:25

Just wanted to say thank you for advising metanium. Have been using it since yesterday afternoon and the rash is already SO much better.

The stuff is like clay though, isn't it? DH had the shock of his life when he changed her yesterday and thought it was very strange pooh in her nappy! Grin

Laughing at clay. Tis very odd stuff. But tis fab. once you've used it, your'll never use anything else.

Chestnutx3 · 18/11/2011 19:03

I would also change the brand of nappy for some reason DS did not get nappy rash with pampers but did with the others especially Aldi's.

CarefullyAirbrushedPotato · 20/11/2011 13:49

As precaution I'd strip wash your nappies (you are using liners of some kind? metanium is NOT cloth friendly)
for future have found nothing better for rashes than raw coconut oil, also liners with silver thread in very good

mamamoonmim · 20/11/2011 22:20

breastmilk is the perfect cure, squirt some on that baby's botty!

CinnamonStar · 21/11/2011 12:53

Is strip washing nappies just washing them without detergent? If so, I have done that (and also ran a 95 degree wash empty to clean the washing machine, and bought some expensive ecover sensitive washing powder).

I am using fleece liners, was slightly worried maybe they were contributing to the rash, so will look into silver ones.

mama I am not very good at squirting Grin would be more of a dribble, but may as well have a try.

DD is much better but still not completely clear. Was planning on starting solids this week, but think I will hold off until this clears up :(

This has been such good advice for me. My DS is 5 months old and has teething associated nappy rash on his penis and testicles, to the point of being red raw. After trying everything I am off to purchase Metanium as it seems to be very popular :-)
