DS has been sleeping for longer than usual lately, as I the last few days. Tonight he had a temp of 37.9 at 4, so had some Calpol. He went to bed at 7 and has just woken screaming. He feels cold and has a temp of 35.2.

We've phoned NHS direct and a nurse is phoning us back within the hour. We've checked the thermometer too and it's reading us fine.

Anyone been there or know what this might be? TIA

It's a sign of an infection. He needs treating as if he's hot and he needs checking over by the out of hours. I hope he's OK.

I have a DD whose temperature is often low when she is sick know one seems to be able to answer the question why not even the paeds docs when they documented it when she was in hospital with a mastoid abscess.

TheRealMBJ · 13/11/2011 21:31

It can be a sign of severe infection. I'd have him seen tonight.

I would take him to A&E, waking up screaming when so cold could mean that he is getting confused due to his very low temperature. Seems he is suffering from an infection.

In the meantime, try to warm him up, skin to skin contact if possible, luke warm drink, chocolates or something with sugar to give him energy boost.

Thanks all.

The nurse has phoned and had me answer all the questions. Result is she says nothing is flagging up but the out of hours doctor needs to check him over.

We've all had a stinker of a bug for the last week so my gut feeling is it is probably that but I'm no doctor. The doctor should phone within an hour and we'll do this dance again. I like the NHS, it's very reassuring to have people on the end of a phone like this.

Hang on. Doc on phone.

Doc is of the opinion that he's fine. She said the temperature fluctuation was unusual but all his vital signs are good so to keep an eye on him and get him checked if anything changes. We did pulse, respiration, circulation etc.

So hopefully he's just fighting off/recovering from a bug whilst giving his parents a good scare. Thanks for all your advice. I will stay in with him tonight and keep a close eye on him.

Thanks for the update. Hope you will all have a good sleep. Assuming he is older than one, it may help to have a thermosflask with some luke warm chamomile tea for when he wakes up in case he is so cold, and some crisps (salt) and chocolate or biscuit (sugar). This is what we were told by paediatrician when our dc had these big temperature swings. Hope he gets better soon.

TheSkiingGardener · 13/11/2011 22:37

Thank you. I will do that (he is 17months). Temperature slowly climbing again so looking good.

Did have chocolate by the bed, but I ate it....
