my 2 year old had bronchiolitis when she was 2 weeks old...i did not make the connection but she constantly has cough and colds, always starting with a runny nose...i now have the ventolin and have only just started the steroid inhaler, in case it is asthma and she will be having a chest x ray monday....is anyone in the same situation as me? i would like to know if some children have grown out of it with time as i am now so exhausted...!!thanks

Ds was hospitalised with brochiolitis at around the same age. He was so ill he didn't cry till he was around 4 months as he just couldn't breathe. He was on steroids, strong inhalers etc for 3 years. And then he started getting better and it just improved from there. He hasn't been on inhalers for years and years now and he's a fit and strong lad of 10!

The paediatrician at the hospital told me it's a v common pattern and those with v early breathing problems like that often improve from age 3 onwards.

There is debate if it is linked to asthma or not.

Ds had it when he was 8 weeks old, bad enough to need cpap and was in for 12 days. He then had bronchi another 3 times (2 of them confirmed by swab).

He is 2 tomorrow and was diagnosed with asthma 12 months back.

well it seems related to asthma...as long as they grow out of it i'm fine....not sure though!

My 3 yr old had bronchiolitis when he was 1 and had a stay in hospital. I am shuddering at the memory.

I noticed after this whenever he got a cold it was always a horrid lingering one. The coughing especially dreadful. We had the ventolin to use.

2 yrs on and I haven't used the ventolin for about 9 month now. I will whisper this next bit in case I jinx myself but I think he's out growing it....

DD had it when she was about 1yo she's 2.5yo now & ever since every time she gets a cold she has a terrible cough & is wheezy. I really do believe it caused some kind of weakness. It's reassuring to hear others say it may disappear with age. I have asthma & I had a terrible time with it as a child (ok now) I really don't want her to have it.

It is very common for young children to get a viral wheeze when they have a cold which is why they are so reluctant to diagnose asthma in children under about 4.

My son was on the strongest inhalers possible when he was a baby/toddler and was never 'officially' diagnosed with asthma. They told us at the GPs and his specialist at hospital that they were hesitant to do so till around 6/7.

Honestly, you would have sworn this child had asthma but they were right and it turned out he didn't lol.

He still has a weakness for chest infections but I think we all have weak spots (I know I do) and this happens to be his!

sorry for the late reply...i'm glad to see that a few of your kids have almost grown out of it...maybe she does not have asthma after all, just weakness...let's wait and see the xray results, am going to take her for xray this coming tuesday...thanks for ur comments!

right, got results, don't know what it means: peribronchial oedema suggestive of viral infection...does it rule out asthma or cystic fibrosis?
