Frequently vomiting (big style!) 8 month old

Hope I've chosen the right topic this time - my first thread I managed to post a question about bra measurement in a topic about camping! Don't ask me how but it caused a few laughs.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced what I am with my 8 month old son. At least twice a week after eating he starts coughing as if something stuck then vomits his whole meal back up. It's pretty horrific horror film type vomit pouring like lava from his mouth. For the first time he's done it twice today - breakfast and tea. He is upset about it at the time but is fine after. It's not as if there is anything in the food to catch on, he's still eating puree.

I also wonder if it is connected to the same problem we are having at our swimming lesson. He's been with waterbabies since he was 5 weeks and has never got used to going under water. In fact we've stopped doing it. He just doesn't catch his breath when he comes up. Once I took him swimming on my own and he only put his face in the water came up couldn't catch his breath and went purple. Frightening.

Something to do with gag reflex?

One of my daughters used to do this, like something went down the wrong way or something, coughing and spluttering and inevitably the vomiting.
She suffered from relux as well and I often wondered were the two connected. The only advice I have really is she did eventually grow out of it (2 years olds now) though I find if she has a fall or fight with her sister and is crying she tends to make herself sick while crying now.

Never had any problems with swimming though. Would he maybe have a sore throat that would be causing him to gag?

This has been going on for a few months now. So doubt he has a sore throat. Good to know he'll grow out of it. Not nice in meantime mind you went to bed obviously having not eaten enough so sleep not good.
