My breastfed (morning and night only) 13 month old has recently started demanding (by squeaking and pointing at his cup) a drink of water just before he goes to sleep (despite having just breastfed) and refusing to settle until he's called me in and had one or two more drinks.

He's always been an enthusiastic drinker day and night - he throws his head back and gulps - and he gets plenty of water during the day and with his meals, but the enthusiasm with which he drinks at bedtime is starting to concern me and I'm worried he's drinking too much. He tends to drink about 2 cups (so 2 x 200ml I guess) per day - of which 50ml of this is drunk at night in about three energetic bursts.

I haven't been worried because I thought it was just him messing around and having a drink to delay bedtime, or that he was just exercising his power to be able to ask for something, but now I'm beginning to wonder whether the urgency with which he demands a drink is indicative of something else.

Does anyone know if there's a limit to the amount they should drink, and whether I should be concerned?

sounds all right to me. you could always give cows milk instead if you wanted to ensure nutrition too?

Thanks smile. It isn't nutrition I'm worried about though. I was worried that it was indicative of something more serious, like diabetes, although I don't think it is tbh. Probably nothing, but think I'll go to our GP and ask him.

yes good idea to get reassurance. DD used to drink 260 mls milk.at bedtime no problem. More if we let her!
