Od lumpy rash

DD has got this rash behind her knees which is very strange. At first glance it looks just like eczema but to touch it's is a patch of hard little lumps. If I squeeze one white stuff, rather like dried pus comes out. They're not blisters, rather like rock solid white heads that haven't quite reached a head IYKWIM.

Any idea what this could be and how to put an end to it. I've tried a range of steroid, antibiotic, antibacterial and anti-fungal creams to no avail.

have you taken her to the gp?
how old is she?

It sounds like what my DS was diagnosed with yesterday ( after being wrongly diagnosed as eczema by two previous GPs) . Molluscum Contagiosum? It is horrible and highly contagious but harmless. My DS's lumps became infected so we have been given Fucidin antibiotic cream.

Once the infection has gone it will go back to being the lumps you have described and could last up to a year.

There are a few threads already on Mumsnet ( I did a search yesterday to get some tips on getting rid of it)

Hope it isn't that but it does sound very similar.

ps - if it is make sure she doesn't scratch it as they will spread and may get infected. My DS's legs are covered.

Seconded molluscum contagiosum - google for pics. One thing our GP said was to be careful using steroid cream as it can enable the virus which causes it to spread more easily, so only to apply to small areas and wash hands before applying to another area (my D had underlying eczema as well so needed the steroid cream to control that). And yes, it is horrible to look at but doesn't seem to be bothering her at all.

Thanks. have googled that right now - some tasty images on there (not). I suppose it looks like that. I thought molluscum was more like blisters than spots?

DaisyH - has your DD managed to get rid of it? If so how long did it last and did you try any kind of treatment? My DS also has eczema but it is kept under control as long as we use oilatum shower gel and a double base cream. Am desperate to hear any good tips about dealing with this virus!

( sorry if I'm hijacking your thread Rattus)

they go like blisters if infected - their normal state is flesh coloured or white bumps ( or so the GP said anyway!)

Mumleigh - Sorry to say that nearly a year later DD still has it. Wierdly it seems to be gradually moving up her body. It does stress me sometimes, but I've done so much research and as there's nothing to do but wait, then that's what I'm doing. One GP suggested fresh pomegranete juice, but she screamed eevry time I tried it, so gave up on that one. There are various homeopathic things, which to my mind personally is nothing but expensive sugar pills (although others may well swear by them) and I've seen plenty of 'immume boosting supplements' advertised, which I find quite worrying for kids, so personally have opted for the NICE guidelines of watch and wait. Frustrating, but mostly it doesn't bother her.

RR - see your GP if in any doubt. There are plenty of wierd rash causing things out there!
