How long can diarrhoea go on for?

DD (will be 3 end lf next week) has had a runny bum for a week (Very runny - this afternoon's nappy was liquid :( sorry if TMI) she was off nursery last Wednesday and obviously can't go tomorrow.

But she is eating (maybe slightly less thatn normal), playing happily and being interested in things, doing heavy wet nappies so obviously not dehydrated

Should I take her to the Dr for diarolyte or similar or let nature take its course?

Can last for a couple weeks in toddlers and babbies Sad, if it lasts for more than 2 weeks then take him to the gp (they will probably ask you for a sample to be sent off).

Thank you Marne - if a couple of weeks is 'normal' then she is hopefully about half way through, or more (fingers crossed)

Nice to know I'm not being a bad mum and leaving her ill without getting her any help - but she isn't acting particularly ill, and trying to potty train herself while I'm v nervous about her wandering around the house without a nappy!

Main concern with diarrhoea is the risk of dehydration, if she is drinking plenty, passing urine/wetting nappies and seems alert this is not too likely.

A week or more not uncommon, action would depend a bit on severity - massive explosions every hour - I would not wait a week. But 3-4 nappies a day? I would watch and wait. IMHO if not improving after a good week GP is happy to send a sample to check, it will have often settled by the time results are back TBH, and will often show a viral infection - treated symptomatically ie avoid dehydration and wait.

Thanks Minnie, fortunately she's always been a big drinker (considering the yard of juice challenge as a party game at her 3rd in a couple of weeks!) so not too concerned on that score, think she's on her way out of it now as the nappies are getting less frequent
