GERD and vaccines

11-week-old DS has his appointment tomorrow for the two-month vaccines. He was colicky from the get-go, with a grace period during weeks seven to nine, but in the last two weeks, he has developed GERD (very little spit-up, but coughing/choking, wet burps, screaming for hours, scratching his face, unable to lie flat or even at a moderate angle) and I'm just wondering whether it's worth delaying the shots? We've had zero sleep this past week, and my gut tells me not to add more medications while this is going on.

For the reflux, we've yet to start medications. I'd be curious to know whether anyone has tried Tucker's Sling, and whether that alone helped stabilise the condition?

Hi Stopgap, one of my little ones had GERDS, thankfully grew out of it by about 20 months. She was on quiet a few different of meds until we we got the right dose/type for her which was ranitidine, gaviscon, thickened formula, cutting out certain foods that aggravated it (eg sweet potato, turnip, fish). To find out what foods were causing problems we had to keep a food diary for her. She also had to have her meds dose adjusted regularly because every few weeks as she got a little bigger the previous dose would stop working. Also keeping her upright for ages after every meal and propping up any place she would have to lie down including cot/changing table. TBH I doubt using a sling would alone help with GERDS. I would try to get him seen by a peads doctor as soon as possible and get him on the right meds as it is a very uncomfortable condition for baby.

With regards to the vaccines, if you are worried maybe ring the surgery and see what doctor suggests.

I wouldn't put off the vaccination. You can give calpol afterwards so he might even sleep better! My 19wk old son has silent reflux so I can sympathise with your exhaustion and anxiety. I hope the meds work ok for you. Ranitidine seems to have had most effect for us.
