dd2 is 7. she has had a hickey type bruise on her upper arm, in the same place, that has appeared spontaneously, 3 times in the last month. each time, we noticed it after school- although that's prob not relevant.

i am going to take her to the dr, but will leave it till the morning as they only had one late appointment which would've meant that she would have missed out on all the halloween stuff.

she is adamant no-one has pinched her. it is too far up her arm for her to have reached it and sucked it- although that's how it looks...
any ideas? bit worried ,tbh.

Is it always the same day? I'm wondering if it's specific to some form of activity? Like sitting on a minibus going to swimming and leaning against the side? That sort of thing.

Dd had one of those last month. It looked exactly like a hickey but after some probing dd told me that she had bashed her arm on the table and then 'pinched herself to stop it from hurting'. [hhmm]

So, maybe your dd has done it herself? (pinching that is, not sucking)

well, i haven't notice the day of the week tbh.

she is adamant that she hasn't knocked it or anything. it's not even like a regular bruise- as i said- it like its been sucked. but i believe her when she says it hasn't...

Frequent 'kneading' of skin in a particular area, so as in the case of my dd 'kneading' and pinching the skin after bashing her arm on the table causes a bruise that looks exactly like a suction one, and nothing like a normal bruise. So she may have absentmindedly been 'rubbing, kneading, manipulating' that bit of skin without being aware of it whilst in class.

Other than that, I don't know. Sorry Smile

Agree with Annie, definately not neurotic. Best to get it checked just in case.

lisad123 · 31/10/2011 21:44

i find my bruises normally appear in same places, because im forever bumping into same things! table, same height, stair gates ect.

noonar · 31/10/2011 21:58

lisad, yes absolutely if it was her shin then i'd be very unconcerned. the inner upper arm doesnt easily get knocked...

will get it checked out tomorrow.

ok, update.

went to dr's first thing. saw lovely junior dr who asked a senior colleague for second opinion. they said its a hickey type mark- not a regular bruise.

they want to see her again tomorrow.

picked dd up just now from school. mark has spread. second similar mark, but lighter below it.

i think she may be doing it herself. i think she could reach.

i have gently tried to coax truth out of her in a no blame kind of way. she seems to be acting a little guiltily in terms of her body language, but often does this even when she hasnt dome anything wrong.

am not sure how to proceed. part of me wants to suggest to her that she may need a blood test to find out what's wrong. i know it would be totally wrong to resort to scare tactics to extract the truth from her, but i need to know for sure if this is self inflicted.

If it is spreading could it have been a tick bite or other insect type bite?
