Hello there,

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post...but here goes:

My five month old DS is showing all the accepted signs of teething (epic drool, everything shoved into mouth etc...). However, he has also started to have a bit of an unhappy tummy, too. He is FF and has gone from doing one or two paste-like yellow poos every other day, to pooping about three or four times a day. His poos are quite mucusy and have little grains in them, as they used to do when he was BF.

Is this normal alongside teething? The "experts" seem to suggest that runny poo is not a symptom of teething, but talking to other people, the anecdotal evidence would suggest otherwise.

He seems alright in himself, other than being off his food slightly as wells as the runny poo. I have topped up his usual feed with a little extra water, just to ensure he stays hydrated (won't take cooled, boiled water at all). He's still doing plenty of wet nappies. Should I be seriously concerned? I don't want to be labelled as a hysterical Mother who runs to the GP at the first sight of hiccups...

What are other people's experiences of teething symptoms and how did you cope with them?

Thank you!

Sounds exactly like teething to me - my DS (now 1 and working on his molars!) is exactly the same when cutting teeth. However do keep an eye on it - if he stops taking any food or the frequency dramatically increases (ie turn into diarrhoea) you should see your GP.

Thanks for your reply WorrisomeHeart - much appreciated! It just seemed to come out of nowhere, as he's been displaying basic symptoms for ages. My big concern is that he's actually a bit poorly. It seems a bit coincidental though...

Well see how he goes. I find that DS gets the poorly tummy when the teeth are coming through the gums but has the drooling etc for weeks before that so you might see something soon! Is he still eating ok?

Btw don't worry about feeling like a paranoid mummy going to the GP - whenever I've taken DS they've said better to be safe than sorry, especially when they're so wee!!

WorrisomeHeart - I took him to the GP yesterday, just in case and she was pretty hopeless actually! She kept going on about chicken pox, which I am certain he doesn't have (no spots, no cold symptoms, fine in himself)! Anyway, he is getting a bit fussy about eating, so I'm keeping an eye on that and offering him small amounts more frequently. Roll on that tooth cutting and thank heavens for Calpol!

Thanks for your support - I have frequently found peer support and anecdotal evidence MUCH more helpful than the doctor!

Crazy GP! Hope it shows itself soon!
