Can you please take at a look at DD's rash?

Pic on my profile. It actually looks much more dramatic than this, some of the patches are much larger and the skin around is red.

She woke up with a 3 or 4 bumps/patches-they looked like stinging nettles blisters a bit.

In the evening she didn't have any.

Came out of the bath and her thighs are covered with them-some are 3 inches across. A few smaller ones on her calves.

I thought that her skin on her back looks like there are lots of very, very faint spots which would fit chicken pox (was a case in the nursery and DD had a lowish fever evening before last) but I'm not sure now.

BUT the red thighs with huge stinging nettle like rush doesn't look anything like chicken pox? WTF is it?

could be hives?

winnybella · 28/10/2011 19:47

I don't know-she never had any allergies (she's 2.9). One of the patches/bumps is almost the whole length of her thigh.

Nothing to do with the chicken pox then? Shall I give her some antihistamine syrup? Shall take her to a doctor tomorrow?

not sure . is she ok in herself ie hot ?weepy? off her food?

winnybella · 28/10/2011 19:48

No, she's fine, but like I said she had a fever 2 days ago...

Will go and check on her now. Very odd.

how was she?

Oakmaiden · 28/10/2011 19:51

Sometimes hives just appears for no completely obvious reason. My son got hives a couple of weeks after one of his immunisations, but has never had it before or since. Not even after subsequent immunisations.

But yes, as long as she has no fever or anything then I would say a spoonful of antihistamine, some calamine or similar if you have some and if she is itchy, and get the Dr to look at it tomorrow if it hasn't settled.

Why do these things ALWAYS happen on a Friday night?

bigTillyMint · 28/10/2011 19:51

It doesn't look like chicken pox to me - they are more like mozzie bites with a yellowy pus'y top and quite small.

If she is "fine", I would wait and see whether she still has them in the morning and then ring the GP if necessary.

Or if you are still worried, ring NHS direct?

Kellamity · 28/10/2011 19:52

It looks like urticaria (nettle rash looking) but difficult to see (probably my computer!). Is it itchy? If so have you got any piriton?

winnybella · 28/10/2011 19:55

Kellamity- yes, it looks as if she walked through nettles, exactly.

It looks like hives to me!!

Agree with other posters who say a spoon of antihistamine and see how she does with that.

Theyremybiscuits · 28/10/2011 19:56

Looks like urticaria to me.

An allergic reaction to something.

Antihistamine needed. It will be itchy.

Has she had anything different to eat on the day it appeared?

winnybella · 28/10/2011 19:57

Just had a quick google and most of the pics look more like red welts or ring worm iyswim and hers are more white with red background.

OP posts:
winnybella · 28/10/2011 20:00

She's not scratching, though Confused

Hmm, food wise it would have to be something she had last night and tonight I guess? Is the reaction pretty much immediate?

Ah. Both yesterday and today at about 5-6pm I gave her some Tropicana smoothie -strawberry and rasberry one? Could it be it? But she had strawberries and rasberries occasionally in the summer and was fine Confused

And why only on thighs? If it was from food, wouldn't she get it everywhere?

And she had no bath last night and yet had a few patches this morning but tonight it seems like it was the bath that brought it up.

Looks and sounds like the allergic reaction I had to some new trousers. It spread all around my waist and upwards too.
Antihistamine to start, and then you think about what could have caused it. An allergy can start at any time, the fact that she hasn't reacted to anything before means nothing.

Kellamity · 28/10/2011 20:04

Just showed DH (GP and urticaria sufferer) he agrees and thinks it looks like urticaria. Just googled urticaria and they are quite extreme photos!! DH's looks like he's just walked though a field of nettles.

Kellamity · 28/10/2011 20:06

Has she been playing outside in the cold? I know it sounds like a silly question but DH gets it when he has been out in the cold, he used to get it a lot after a walk with the dog in the evenings. DD occasionally gets it on her thighs when she has been riding and got really cold. At first we thought it was a reaction to the horses but it's not every week (she spends a lot of time with horses) and only when she's cold - just like DH!

WitchOfWoo · 28/10/2011 20:08

Have you changed washing powder/ soap/ fabric conditioner?

Is she teething? (I am asking this as ds had a funny thing like bubbles under his skin round nappy area when teething)

CrosswordAddict · 28/10/2011 20:14

Nettle rash (or hives or urticaria) always come up more after a warm bath. The heat on the skin's surface increases blood flow. They do look scarey I admit.
Cooling cream - E45 Itch relief Cream is good.
Try antihistamine. No bath foam/oil/smellies for a while. [hsad]
Personally, if I feel a bit itchy in the evening I take the antihistamine BEFORE I go for a bath. My nettle rash is the result of an episode years ago and still recurs sometimes. Getting too hot is my trigger. [hsmile]

winnybella · 28/10/2011 20:35

Thank you all so much Smile You have all calmed me down. I don't think she's been in a cold unless in the nursery Hmm but then she didn't have the rash before bath so I guess that's not it.

She isn't scratching so I didn't give her any antihistamine. Do I have to?

OP posts:
Kellamity · 28/10/2011 20:46

If it's not bothering her I wouldn't bother with medication.

Hope it clears up soon Smile

winnybella · 28/10/2011 20:48

Ok. Thanks to your DH as well, Kellamity-always very reassuring to have professional's opinion Smile
