Persistent Veruccas - how to get rid please?

DD, 8, has had veruccas for years now. We don't do swimming or anything like that so I'm pretty sure it's not a case of reinfection. I've had her treated a number of times by the chiropodist who's put industrial strength stuff on them (painful), and this has cleared one foot, but the other still has several with a new one in between her toes. I've also tried the freezing Bazuka style stuff to no avail so am despairing.

DD has vitiligo, which affects immune system, so think it may have something to do with this. GP didn't seem to think so though and couldn't really suggest anything. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can get rid once and for all please? TIA.

There's nothing you can do to get rid of them. They will just go one day. Most weird things that appear to work don't really, it is just coincidence.

Bigscarymum - seriously? No treatments actually work?

I've tried the salicylic acid plasters (seemed to be starting to work but DS couldn't keep the plasters on in the summer) and freezing kit (useless). I was intending to re-try the plasters again now he is full time in socks....

Everyone on here normally pipes up with banana skin and duct tape - not tried it, but ????? who knows? Google that

noddyholder · 27/10/2011 19:09

Duct tape is clinically proven I took part in a mini trial. I am immunosuppressed and many like me are plagued with viral skin things like warts and duct tape and freezing have worked for me as has tea tree oil which is slower but leaves no scar and is easy to do HTH xx

MaggieW · 27/10/2011 20:27

Thanks all. So Noddyholder do you literally cover them with duct tape and leave it on? How long for and over what period of time please? Am trying tea tree oil at the moment but will get a hold of some duct tape too.

It won't make any difference. They may go,or they may not. "mini trial" is the important bit. Statistical significance? I had a disgusting huge verrucca for years. I used to treat it periodically, dig it out, freeze it etc etc. One day it suddenly went. They do. It is your body eventually mounting an immune response.

This web site:
www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Warts/Pages/Treatment.aspx

It suggests some things may speed up treatment slightly (although it doesn't offer any evidence). It also tells you how to do the duct tape treatment.

When I was about 11 I had a mahoosive verucca which eventually needed a trip to the chiropodist, some scary powder sprinkled on my foot, which was taped up and I had to keep it out of water for 2 weeks - it worked and I never had another one until......fast forward 7 years, am at uni, and I spot another one. Freaking out at the memory of the last one I take a trip to the doctor. He was an interesting sort who told me he wasn't going to give me anything as veruccas were a virus (ok so far) which for some reason the body just struggled to get shot of. So what he wanted me to do was to "think positive thoughts to will it away" Hmm. Snorting with derision, I decided to give it a go. By god the damn thing was gone in three weeks. So there you go, think it gone. And it will be so... G'night folks...

ivykaty44 · 28/10/2011 22:41

my dad swears by tea tree cream, my fairy god mother says leave them alone - she was a chiropodist - and they will go anyway

nightcat · 29/10/2011 18:40

hhmm, I waited close to 20 years for mine to go, have tried freezing and various ointments with no luck. Then I tried banana/tape and it worked!! - and I had thought it was going to outlive me - wa ha ha ha ha [hgrin]
my vote goes to banana skin & tape [hsmile]

My dd had a verucca one one foot and tried all shop products to get rid of it. Doctor said leave it and it will go on its own. It didn't. It spread and her one foot was covered and then the other foot was getting them. The first one only came when she started swimming at school so i will blame that. Doc gave us some stuff in a bottle to paste on. A few went but most never and that very first verucca would not budge. So dd was referred for a hospital appointment to get rid. In the meantime we went abroad a few weeks before the appointment. Dd did go in the childrens pool (i know she shouldn't have but she is always the only one in there every time we go). A few days later looking at the feet the veruccas were shrinking. At hopsital appointment the consultant gave a prescription for some more stuff but stronger. But actually didn't need it as veruccas disappeared almost overnight and i swear it was from the pool on holiday. I think it may have been the stuff they put in it, like antifungals and the like. So there you go. Go on holiday and use the pool! Good luck.

Garlic - cheap and effective. Wasnt painful either. Tried all the usual stuff none of it worked. The verrucas I initially treated they had had for over 6 months and resisted all other traditional methods of removal. The chiropodist recommended the following.

  1. Cut a thin sliver of garlic clove, enough to cover the verruca. Put it to one side.
  2. Crush the remainder of the clove. I used a crusher, but use whatever you prefer.
  3. put the Crushed garlic in the middle of a small bit of fabric we had some old muslins so I used those. A clean bit of old sock would be just as effective.
  4. Pull the sides of the fabric together and twist so that the garlic gets squeezed tighter and tighter. It takes a bit of squeezing but does work. I did this over the vercucca so the oil would drip directly on to the verruca. You can equally collect a load together and the drop onto each verruca.
  1. place tiny sliver of garlic over the verrcua then cover with a plaster overnight. I like the fabric ones as they do not fall off as easy.
  1. Remove the plaster garlic in the morning - if its still in place. Despite ours not always being in place this treatment still worked.

I did this every night at bedtime -= my children are quite active so I didnt hold out much hope of the plaster staying in place otherwise) Within a couple of weeks they were all gone.

My children always get verrucas and this has worked everytime without scarring.

It was not an immune response I and all others on the trial were transplant patents and are immunosuppressed which is why the body will never fight the virus. It was the only thing which worked completely. It was a mini trial in that all patients were transplanted not in numbers. Try it it works.
