Vitamins for french baby

Hi my ds2 was born here in France and ever since his birth 6 months ago the midwives in the hospital and now his pedeatrician are insisting that he takes a floride and vit D suppliment which would be given to him daily in a syrup form. I have refused so far as he is a breastfed baby (I have started him on a couple of teaspoons of carrot puree for about 2 weeks now) and I didn't understand why they wanted me to give him this sugary syrup of vitamins when with my ds1 who was born in the UK there was no mention of vit suppliments. I was under the impression that breat milk gives them everything they need. We spend a lot of time outside so he has lots of exposure to daylight where he can naturally make his own vit D. Anyway any advice would be much appreciated, I am tired of being made to feel by these French doctors that I am some crazy English hippy who is risking my childs life! Thanks

It is a standard practice in Germany as well - my DD has been prescribed fluoride and Vit D in form of tablets since the day one and will be taking them for at least another six months. She was EBF for 6 months btw., but I think all babies are treated the same.
