Should I treat this temperature or not?

DS is 6yo. He was complaining of feeling unwell earlier today with tummy pains. Two hours ago his temp was 38 degrees. He had a nap and now his temp is 39.2 degrees. He is clearly under the weather with something, and a bit lethargic sitting on the sofa watching TV eating an ice lolly. He is talking ok and even telling me jokes, so he can't be too ill? I haven't given him anything as I've heard that letting the body's temperature rise is a good way of fighting off germs/virus naturally. But my question is, when should I give calpol/nurofen? Should I give it before bed if it's still high?

I would give him Calpol on the basis that it has gone up in a short space of time. Hope he feels better soon.

What I usually do (but I might be wrong) is only give meds if temp is around 39 + unless they are in pain obviously. At night though I give meds for loiwer temps in case they spike in night.

I do keep a close eye on the temp though. In your case I would have probably medicated.

Keep in mind that tum¤y pains can be the glands swollen when fighting an infection. Ds always says sore tummy even for a raging ear infection and pneumonia!

If his temp doesn't come down with meds after a while I would get him seen in case its a bacterial infection because ime viral temps come down with temps.

I judge by how well they are coping with the temperature. If they are fairly normal as in, eating, drinking, awake playing or chilling out and watching TV etc I just keep them in pants and vest and leave it to run it's course. But if they are restless, feverish, whining and grumpy I will give them a half dose of calpol, if that doesn't help within 30 mins they get a full dose of Ibuprofen, then repeat until they are not 'ill' with the temp.

My kids run temperatures quite often and you wouldn't be able to tell within actually touching thier skin as they don't even realise half the time.

With the tummy pains I would check his tonsils, stomach ache and a temp are other symptoms of tonsilitis.

Thanks.
I waited awhile and just gave him ice lollies and a slushie but temp kept going up and reached 40 degrees. I gave him 10ml of calpol and after an hour it had come down to 38.6. He's in bed asleep now but I'll keep an eye on him and see how he is in the morning.
