OK well you don't know what they are but I've spoken to a couple of parents now- wish I had their contact deets- and they use other remedies so I know they do exist!!

Remedies are things you take when you've already got the illness. Once you've caught measles, whooping cough, polio etc its a bit late to start taking a homeopathic treatment for it.

Vaccinate or don't - personally I think the risks of not vaccinating are worse than the risks of vaccinating, but you're entitled to your own opinion on that.

But there isn't anything homeopathic which even claims to protect against disease in advance in the way that vaccinations do. All they say is "ooh don't trust conventional medicine", but they do not provide any equivalent, even by their own claims.

TheBrideofFrankenstein · 12/10/2011 15:04

Will Kick Off Grin

If you're saying, is there a clinically proven homeopathic remedy against tetanus, polio, diptheria, or whooping cough, then no there isn't.

verlainechasedrimbauds · 12/10/2011 15:05

It honestly is important for people to know that homeopathy has no active ingredients whatsoever. It's good that you are trying to find out more about it, but please do take notice of the science as well as the fans of homeopathy.

There seems to be a frequent confusion between homeopathic (with no active ingredients) and herbal (which has something in it which may or not have some scientific, as opposed to anecdotal, evidence behind it).

To quote Tim Minchin: "Alternative medicine has either not been proved to work, or has been proved not to work. Do you know what they call alternative medicine that has been proved to work?...........medicine "

TheBrideofFrankenstein · 12/10/2011 15:05

By the way, has anyone claimed the £1m prize since the last homeopathy thread?..........you know, the one that's up for grabs to the first person who can prove homeopathy works

TootAndCommon · 12/10/2011 15:06

Not being vaccinated in this country is not such a great risk because so many life threatening illnesses have been made rare through other people's children being vaccinated.

Would you really travel to a malarial area without anti-malarial drugs, or risk yellow fever, Typhoid, Cholera etc in other places? Or would you turn to the oppressive offer of vaccination?

Sorry PerfectMummy, I don't think it is 'slamming' someone to encourage them to look at stuff that is completely unproven and not based in any scientific evidence to protect thier children against serious illnesses, I think it would be patronising to say anything different.

At least herbal medicine has substances which make an impact (even if occasionally poisonous and of unknown dose).

I have a friend who is a homeopath, I find it very interesting.
Antibiotics and vaccinations are a big no no

But as far as I know, they don't have an exact alternative, they just treat the symptoms

the remedies for illnesses and ailments are very diluted, so they get slated on MN as being water or placebos

I didn't know it was so widely disregarded until I came on MN
My friend got involved when her children were seriously affected by excema.
and she "cured" them all!

Tianc · 12/10/2011 15:13

The theory of homeopathy is to give tiny quantities of a substance that causes a disease or similar symptoms, in order to cure the disease.

I have good news for you, shadylane.

There is a readily available procedure giving tiny quantities of a substance that causes a disease (in special inactive or attenuated form), stimulating the body's natural immune system to provide long-term protection against the disease.

All GPs provide this, and will be glad to do it for you.

TheBrideofFrankenstein · 12/10/2011 15:14

I guess vaccinating will always be a risk/reward trade off, but on that note, if you think the risk is such that you want to use something to reduce it (eg homeopathic vaccine), then you should just get the vaccination.

If you think the risk of vaccinating is more than the risk from the disease, then don't vaccinate.

Just don't base your decision on random strangers in the park with apple cheeked kids.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 12/10/2011 15:15

It would be nice if this didn't kick off.

Homeopathic remedies - many people think they're tosh, others don't.

Vaccines - some children can't have them, others' parents object to them, some parents are happy to take the risk, some don't think there is a risk.

Homeopathic vaccines though? They don't exist.

That's it in a nutshell OP.

TheBrideofFrankenstein · 12/10/2011 15:16

I have backpacked round the world unvaccianted Toot. Cos i think i have an immune system that isnt passive

yeah, all those people in China coughing their guts up with TB. If only they weren't vaccinated their immune systems would be more pro-active. Oh hang on a minute- they werent.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/10/2011 15:18

My DH has bad eczema on his hands - one of the prescribed creams made it worse, there was obviously something in the formulation he reacted to. He worked through everything on the shelf in Boots - found a homeopathic graphites cream which helps - but that's precisely because it has nothing in it , its just a soothing cream. Sometimes less is more.

But in the case of vaccines - you need the real deal or let your kids take their chance with the disease.

shadylane · 12/10/2011 15:18

Thanks guitar. Rivinwithoutabingle- I like the cut of your ib. I want to take my son to India but was worried about all the malaria hype etc.

I am intrigued that this thread is not under any topic- how did you start it?

Secondtimelucky · 12/10/2011 15:23

Malaria hype? Nearly one million people a year die of malaria.

Just saying...
