Enlarged Tonsils

Does anyone have a DC with enlarged tonsils? DS has very loud, laboured breathing most nights and GP says its because his tonsils are too big. GP doesn't want to do anything about it as he says as DS gets bigger, the problem will decrease, but we are up 3-4 times in the night checking him, he often wakes us all with the snoring/loud breathing and I am convinced there are times when he stops breathing altogether for short periods.

Any advice please?

My ds has massive tonsils, but his breathing doesn't seem badly affected. Fortunately he has never got tonsilits because they almost touch now and I think he would be in trouble if they were swollen. Because of they role they play in infection resistance our GP also felt there was no action necessary, and that they would shrink in time. He is 5 now and they are as big as ever.

In your case, I would be asking for a referral to ENT specialist because of the possible sleep apnoea.

DS has enormous tonsils and is about to lose them. He was referred pretty quickly due to sleep apnoea (he was 3 when we noticed). I would ask for a referral and mention the apnoea - the consultant found that one of DS's nostrils is completely blocked (and I feel like a rubbish parent for not realising this for years). She also said that they operate for breathing difficulties, while it is unlikely that they would operate for infections.
