How to give antibiotics to a toddler during the night (four times a day)

It needs to be given four times a day, every six hours. It would be impossible to wake him up during the night to give some food before giving the antibiotics. He would have managed it on an empty stomach but the antibiotics should never be taken like that. If I let him sleep the whole night then it is going to be three times a day and not four. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Have never woken any of my 3 to give abs in the night. Just spread evenly over waking hours, so 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm.

I will have to make a call to a nurse or GP regarding the intervals and then will be coming back.

Are you using a syringe? Squirt in side of mouth, he shouldn't have too much chance to spit it out.

Check with chemist re the mixing with choc mousse.

They are going to call me back later today. Also, they prescribed the medicine but did not say how long it should be taken for... The instruction was not inside of the back.

I am using a measuring cup but if the next dose does not work I will have to use the syringe too.

OP, you sound very stressed and worried and that is natural when you are worried about your DC. But you are overthinking this one.

Bupa are not a good source of medical advice, they make vast amounts of money out of non serious conditions and making perfectly sensible individuals worry unnecessarily over their health.

And I am not disputing what a paediatrician may have said to a PP.

BUT antibiotics are not quite the exact science many people think they are, when given to a usually well child in the community (I am not talking about complicated IV regimes for life threatening sepsis). Your child is not the only one that has ever spat doses out, and the 'with food' is generally just to do with the fact that erythromycin can be a bit sickly making, not that it causes a problem if you don't. If your child is well enough to sleep through the night, and isn't waking up with a temperature needing calpol at 2am (which tbh mine would even just with a cold), they'll be fine with the 4 doses spaced out in the day. Chocolate mousse is fine or else learn to aim with a syringe for the very edge of the tonsillar fossa and they'll swallow it reflexively. Hope you see someone with a bit of common sense mixed in with all that book knowledge to put your mind at rest.

I too would space 4 doses evenly out over the day, every 4 hours.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 22/09/2011 11:58

So the GP said it could be taken during the day, so I am now happy that we can all have a sleep during the night. It could be mixed up with the mousse. Will be off soon to the shop.
Just wanted to thank everyone for the support and suggestions! I really did not know that antib-s can be taken during the day and not during the 24 hours.

The really important thing to remember is to finish whole course.

Oh, and most infections get better by themselves anyway. Antibiotics shorten most things by about 24 hours!

PromiseFalls · 22/09/2011 16:53

Hope you all get some sleep tonight and fingers crossed the choc mousse works.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 23/09/2011 11:31

I did have some good sleep eventually. May be because my little one is getting better and did not bother me that early.
Little monkey did not want to drink his medicine with his chocolate milk shake. I wasted one dose. Then he had it like that. It takes like 20 min to wrestle him :) but then he drinks it. Why cannot he just drink it instead of being that fussy. It smells nice though unlike tablets.
Thank you everyone.
