started yesterday, really bad. I'm assuming it's worms. She's 10yo so I don't really get to see her poo, she says she hasn't seen anything odd in her poo. Anyway I gave her ovex tablet last night and it took her ages to go to sleep as it was so bad.
She's been fine today but now it's started again. Does the ovex not work straight away? Or might it be something else, she's crying it's that bad. I've had a look at her bum and can't see anything, it's not red, nor any signs of worms.

is there any point in treating your family, just in case or do you really need to know for sure first?

One big wash to start with, treat whole family with Ovex (unless under 2 or pregnant, in which case Pripsen piperazine - not mebendazole version), fingernails short, pants in bed for all, clean sheets and towels, hoover tomorrow.

Then chill and re-treat in 2 weeks (personally, I re-treat after one week AND two weeks, just to be sure) and keep an eye on the handwashing/nails/pants thing during that time.

With young kids, do wash their favourite (ie bed-time) cuddlies too.

Kids who scratch their bums, bite their nails and pick their noses are a lot more likely to reinfest themselves BTW. Might be worth dropping that into conversation.

Oh, and I read on the Oz national advice website that washing at normal temps is fine - hotter makes no difference. It does with bedbugs apparently Shock but not worms.

x-post - kids who suck their thumbs and/or a dummy ditto. Little boy we were on holiday with had worms, and his mum is sure his dummy was the culprit [ick]

Showering morning and night and giving the bottie area a good spray is excellent anti-worm defence as well.

poor you and your DD - remember drinking pripsen over 30 yrs ago - is it still that rotten blackcurrant flavour? I remember the whole family had to be treated. Feel sorry for my poor mum trying to get 5 girls to drink it.

Indeed it describes most children and indeed many of their fathers I imagine. Grin

rathlin - it hasn't changed a bit - I couldn't believe it, but it really hasn't.

DS had threadworms earlier this year. Ovex didn't work. GP prescribed something I can't remember the name of it. Meantime, I was told to go nuts with the hand washing, wash bedding, wear undies in bed. Takes about 10 days to get them.

They didnt wander

DD2 had signs of worms ...i.e. itchy bum (and I think I saw one) so the whole family took Ovex yesterday. Now DD1 has tummy ache...could it be a side effect of the Ovex? She's been complaining of a sore tummy most of the day but it's got worse this evening, only just got her into bed. No other symptoms. Anybody else experienced anything like this??

Sodding hell, DD has got worms! Spent all day washing, hoovering, dusting, cleaning...off to Boots in the morning for Ovex (you can get it over the counter can't you?).

This is so much more amusing alarming than the BBC health website. I thought this was going to be a straightforward thing to deal with but now I am thinking we need to move house.

I think DS1 has the wrigglies. I looked, but I haven't seen anything, but he has a really itchy bum especially at night.

So let me get this straight.

  1. We all have to take ovex - twice?
  2. We all have to drink something?? What? Do I need to go to GP to get this or can I get it from Boots?
  3. I need to put Sudocream round his hole - For how long? All our holes. ? DH is going to LOVE this.
  4. Eggs fly and go for your eyes and nose and fanny. so I need to steam clean the whole house? fuck.
  5. I need to cut his fingers off at the knuckles so he can't scratch his bum.
  6. Anything else to look forward to?
