5yr old getting glasses - top tips please

Like how do I get him to like them and not think glasses looks silly?

Can I avoid him (or DS2 15mo) accidentally trashing them?

Anything tips for wearing them (and not loosing them) at school?

Do these look like girls glasses or could a boy (who's favourite colour in the whole wide world is red and loved these when we went for a quick look earlier) get away with them?

Anything else helpful for someone who's never worn glasses?

They will become part of him after the few days, both my dc have needed glasses, my ds has the astigmatism and needed patched for a while, although he was only 3, he needs to wear glasses forever like me!

Ds started wearing glasses when he had just turned 3 and he is 6.4 now and his eyes have only just settled enough so he can see a normal optician rather than the childrens eye clinic!

Aww! Well done deep keeping it a positive experience.

Could you add a sticker every time he wears his glasses all day?

That's what the optician suggested too Carrot, so we'll give that a go too. Woked really well when he needed an incentive not to faff too much at school so maybe we can work up to a really cool day out of his choosing. Just hoping the other kids in class don't put him off now.

Try hard to give him an, "I get to have them" attitude rather than an "I have to have them" and you will be well on the way.

I worried about it and in the end it was not a big deal at all.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you get on.

Yeah, I think I'll have to find some really great stickers that he'll just love, maybe some packs of ben 10 ones or something.

Will let you know how he/we get on.

Hi, my DD is 5 and has had to wear glasses for about 6 months now. I wear them for driving, reading etc so does DP and grandma etc so I just showed her everyone else who wears them and made a fuss saying she got to be like us. Also they have a great range of glasses and I made a deal if choosing them. I paid for the designer ones and paid for the lenses to be thinned and that cost £9 and the frames were £26 so with the NHS voucher I paid £35 which I think is fab. DD2 has snatched them off her face a few times and she has been put on the naughty step straight away and it doesn't happen anymore she knows she can't touch them. Luckily DD1 has accepted them, she will have to wear them forever so she's got to. What's good is she realises she can see better with them so wants to wear them. Good luck with your DS

Just read some earlier posts... I asking made a day out type thing of choosing the glasses and picking them up. Like someone else said, made it into she gets to have them not have to have to have

Just thought you might like an update - DS loves his new glasses and (so far) they've made it through three days back at school intact. He's been getting loads of really good comments about them, which is great as they were definitely his choice. I've put a photo on my profile (hope it's worked).

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement :)
