ok ds (2)got croup (sp?) in (i think) november. it was during the night and i posted here for advice. advice varied between ringing NHS direct (isn't available in my area) and taking him into A&E. i called OOH GP and he advised to take him outside or run the hot water in the bathroom with the door closed and if he didn't improve, to take him in to A&E. thankfully the bathroom helped and he settled right down. i later attended a 1st aid course and was given the same advice by the instructor. so ds started the same coughing and trouble breathing last night and i followed the same procedure. he settled and fell over to sleep until 7.30 ish this morning when he woke and was having trouble again. i did the walk outside and then the bathroom but he was still struggling so i took him in to a&e. the doctor asked me why i had taken him in for croup. i explained that it was advice i had been given by a first aid instructor. he snorted and said "well that's not very good first aid is it? anybody can take a child to a&e" ds was still 'wheezing' at this point so it was clear there was something up but i felt as if i had done the wrong thing. should i not have taken him in?

Even so effinNell sometimes the only first aid (other than keeping them comfy) is to get them to A and E as soon as possible.

When DS had a serious croup attack last week while waiting for the ambulance we sent for a paramedic neighbour - there was nothing he could do except keep the situation calm as what he needed was the meds only the ambulance/hopsital could provide.

The doctor was being a twat.

The whole point of first aid is that it the help given to someone first, before they can be seen by a health care professional.

Our first aid trainer is always very clear that all you are doing is buying the patient time until you can get professional help.

IME I always feel a little guilty about going to A&E - even the times when DS has hit his head, stopped breathing and passed out. I still feel as though I need to justify myself. Silly really.

if the doctor treated your ds then how could he say you shouldn't have been there?! i've been to kids a&e a few times with my 3 as babies and some times felt i really didn't need to be there but all the medical staff i spoke to said i absolutely should get them checked out, and in fact i've been told to go to a&e more than i felt i needed to as they always seem to have problems out of hours so i get sent there by nhs direct. the last time i went because i was worried about my baby's breathing they kept me in overnight for observation.

better safe than sorry when it comes to your kids health.

What an idiot that doctor was.

Ds regularly needed taking to a&e for croup as a baby and always required steroids as it affected him quite badly.

You absolutly did the right thing.
