MIL picked cradle cap

I am really annoyed about this and have made my feelings to her perfectly clear. She was asleep on her for about an hour yesterday while I got on with some jobs. During that time she picked all the big pieces of DD's cradle cap off (she claims she just rubbed). Now I am really worried that she may have damaged her hair. Can anyone reassure me? Thanks.

I did this to my grandson - and got told off big time by my daughter :(

Tinnia is completely different - it's a type of ringworm on the scalp and a complete bugger to deal with. DD got it when she was 2 and it left a massive bald patch that took nearly a year to regrow. She had to take oral antifungals for 3 months as well.

She's now 7 and has all her hair - I did worry that it might never grow back.

FWIW, Burts Bees Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash is very effective on cradle cap.

GP friend told me it's fine to gently brush it out, but don't pick as you can damage the scalp which is then at risk of infection. Nothing to do with it being bad for their hair.

I used to be quite obsessed with picking my DCs' cradle cap - just so satisfying. And until just now I had no idea anyone thought it wasn't fine - so if your MIL is my sort of age (40s/50s/upwards) then she probably just didn't get it.

I agree with poldera about the nit comb! Lots of conditioner and a not comb softens it up and comes off gently a treat- I'm pretty sure after my oldest had nits the younger ones were conditioned and combed and was last we saw of the cradle cap!!

PilkoPumpPants · 13/11/2016 20:55

I did the same as your mil with my dd. Shes now 4 with very thick wavy hair which grows like mad.

wibblywobblyfish · 13/11/2016 21:01

OMG I love cradle cap. Nothing better than soaking it and lifting it off with a nit comb.

ShowOfHands · 13/11/2016 21:07

It's been 5 years. I assume it's all dealt with now.

Hassled · 13/11/2016 21:11

:o Showy. I had completely failed to spot that. Cradle Cap baby is now Y1 and picking her nose enthusiastically.

madmomma · 16/11/2016 21:28

Picking her cradle cap was the highlight of mothering my eldest did now 18. She has more and thicker hair than anyone I know. Don't worry at all. X

They're not scabs! It's oily dead skin cells!

GettingitwrongHauntingatnight · 16/11/2016 21:39

Omg you can pick your brain out? ShockWinkConfused

FastWindow · 16/11/2016 21:39

Picker here. Only the easy bits mind. If it feels like its really attached leave it a day or two. Olive oil is said to help but breast milk (if you are in possession of some) is also fab.
My dd has absolutely gorgeous hair, like one of those American pageant toddlers. bugger to brush though

GettingitwrongHauntingatnight · 16/11/2016 21:41

Being serious, its your baby cradle cap mil is well OOO.
