DS3 aged 2½ complaining of headache - what to do?

DS3 who is exactly 2½ today has been under the weather for a couple of weeks really - he's had a rash around his bottom, on and off temperatures, just not right. Then a few days ago he developed what I thought was constipation, although now I think that it's more that it is hurts to poo (sorry if tmi) rather than the poo itself as it's as normally sloppy as DS3's tend to be. So he's had a couple of swabs done at the doctors this afternoon for possible perianal streptoccoccal dermatitis.

Anyhow, this may be unrelated but, on tuesday he ran a temperature all day, yesterday he was fine, and today he was fine until he woke up from his afternoon nap and was screaming and clutching his head and saying "sore head". Well he didn't stop crying until we got into the doctors for the swabs to be done just before 5. I mentioned the temperature headache thing and she checked him over and said that it just seemed to be a virus and not to worry.

When we got home he sat on the sofa quietly crying and looking forlorn. Then around an hour ago he started really crying again, was sick, and then sat clutching his head and saying "sore head" and "bed".
So we put him in bed and he has fallen asleep immediately, but i'm in a quandry over what to do. I've never had a child complain so young of a headache, and I'm just a bit worried although at the same time don't want to over-react.
Any thoughts please??

Really glad to hear he is feeling better. I was woken at 5am with DD having an asthma attack which cause her to vomit all over my bed (3y) Hmm I have managed to get out of work early so we can go to the doctors.

They are such a cause of worry arn't they!

Will you take him back to the doctors to tell them about the headaches? I would.

Yes bohica I have a follow up appointment for the swab results anyway so will mention it again.
Sorry about your DD, hope she's feeling better. I am yawning away here, desperate for a little kip ( got to do the school run in a minute) and I'm doing a nightshift tonight - eek! Shock

Intermittent temperature and headache could be strep even without a sore throat. Ask GP to swab throat and get a penicillin prescription in case it's positive.

Hi
just an update for anyone who was around and interested........
Thankfully his temperature and headache cleared up after a couple more days and he improved in temperament to a certain extent.
Rash and soreness of bottom continued, and today I got a phonecall from the docs confirming my suspicions that he did have a strep infection on his bits (poor lamb).
Anyway...I wanted to say a big thanks to Mumsnet in general as it was only by searching on here that I first saw a link to a page about perianal streptococcal dermatitis. I can't find the page now (it was an old one not actually directed at me IYSWIM) but one of the common things about this infection is it is often misdiagnosed and mistreated for a while leaving your LO in a lot of distress. So I'm very grateful I got to the bottom (excuse pun) of it and he has today started on a course of penicillin which will hopefully clear it up in no time.
Am looking forward to getting my cheery boy back! Smile
