5 year old needs a filling

Feel like such as bad mum as ds2 needs a filling. We have been referred to a special clinic to have it done. Consultation is tomorrow. Really worried that they will have a go at me for not looking after his teeth properly. Do many 5 year olds need fillings or is it just me?

Annoyed thatI wrote you a long reply & lost all of it due to damned road works affecting my IC Hmm

Try not to feel so bad, I was in your shoes with Dd at 2.5 months - on my birthday - I felt like the worst Mum in the world as Dd was having a tooth out under GA Blush - even though up to then she'd NEVER eaten sweets, chocolate or had any other sugary nasties , such as ketch up, squash etc etc Shock - the dental hospital DIDN"T criticise - I did ask though as I was so confused by it, friends 3 DCs ate sweets & drank squash daily & yet had NEVER had any dental trouble Confused

Dentist suggested it might be milk, but did say that some DCs just have weaker teeth - mine certainly has, as by 8 she's had 2 teeth taken out & 2 fillings - yet still rarely gets sweets etc, due to allergies & us being health food freaks & cleans her teeth properly at least twice a day Confused

An alternative therapist friend reckons theres a connection between stress in pregnancy & DCs tooth enamel being weaker - certainly fits for us & another friend whose elder DC had the same problem - she had a special coating painted onto the adult teeth, something I intend to have done with DD at a later date.

Hope that helps & DD recovered really quickly & wasn't in the least bit stressed or in pain :) - & my DD is a real little worry wort, so yours will no doubt be fine - just try to keep yourself calm so as not to pass on your own fear to DD - oh & Lavender or roman chamomile aromatherapy oil on ther clothing can help with that Wink

Thank you so much for your reply. I feel much better now. Come to think about it I probably was quite stressed in his pregnancy as I had suffered a miscarriage before his pregnancy.

RockinHippy, may I ask how they put your Dd to sleep for GA? My Dd 4.5 has to have her bottom back teeth out as they have crumbled, they have tried to save them by filling etc but she kept getting an abcess so they have decided to take them both out!
Do they use a mask or needle to send them to sleep?

rockinhippy · 25/05/2011 09:42

Hi coffee yes of course - your DD sounds to be the same problem ours had & since having them out, no more infections :)

they numbed the back of her hand with gel, came back with a pre med injection, which she didn't feel at all - the nurse was great at distracting her (me too for that matter) :) - followed by hooking her up to a drip when she was more woozy & didn't care about needles etc.

She came around quite quickly afterwards & wasn't at all distressed by it - more than I can say for myself, I felt awful for her - but they really were great - looking back on it, I think the injection was far better than a mask, she has no real memory of it, yet I still remember the smell & feel of having a mask (shudder) at a similar age

I think the worst bit was the drive home, DD gets travel sick, so that on top of the drug meant she was ill on the way home, but slept it off on getting home & didn't complain at all about being sore :)

I had four fillings in my milk teeth but have none in my adult teeth, so there is hope. :)

rockinhippy · 25/05/2011 09:46

Thats good to hear lilRed THANK YOU :)

LilRedWG · 25/05/2011 09:47

Oh and the dentist said he doubts that I will ever need one (I'm 37 now).

CoffeeGoneColdAgain · 25/05/2011 10:27

Thanks Rockin, I am very scared for her, She has been brilliant going to the emergency dentist over the last 3 weeks, they have given me a script for some AB's if we need them between now and 15th June, hoping that she wont as all seems ok at the moment!
Do you think she will be off from nursery school for a few days then? I'm guessing the Ga will wipe her out for a good few days, Sorry for so many questions, :)

rockinhippy · 25/05/2011 10:43

No worries on the questions coffee I remember too well how worried I was about it all, so glad to help :)

last time she had it done she was 5 & recovered quicker than the first time round (when only 2)

I had prepared to keep her home a couple of days if needed, but after sleeping off the anesthetic on getting home - which is quite a light one, as they come around almost as soon as they come out of the theatre - she was up & raring to go & demanding to go back to School the next day - I let her, though of course cleared it with School/Teacher & she coped fine (though I did pop up with some more calpol/calprofen mid day as felt it best) - if anything I think being at School took her mind off it :)

CoffeeGoneColdAgain · 25/05/2011 10:48

Ah thats brilliant (glad your Dd coped well with it) I just hope mine does!
She is only in school 12.30 - 3.30 so i will be able to dose her up before hand if and when she is ready to go in!
Thanks for your help!

rockinhippy · 25/05/2011 10:59

no problem hope it goes as well for you as it did us - I'm sure it will, those specialist places are brilliant with kids :)
