I think DS has a stork mark, but it's massive

I posted about a month ago about this and everyone thought it was a stork mark. But I think it's getting bigger. Now when it flushes it's over 2/3 of his forehead that goes bright red.

It's so big that his GPs spotted it on skype yesterday, they've seen him in the flesh several times and never noticed it before (as it was smaller), and they thought he must have had an accident. They've got 4 children, 4 grandchildren and over 30 nieces and nephews and maintain they've never seen anything like it before.

So now I'm worried again.

Also, I think the colour is darker red/purple than it was.

Is there anything I should do about it please?

I don't know what a stork mark is i'm afraid but why don't you give your health visitor a call to talk it over, they might be more experienced and able to advise you.

Does he have eczema at all?

My DS's stork mark was very noticeable, but he got impetigo on it, and it was treated quickly, and then went back to normal IYSWIM.

Can 'strawberry' type birthmarks darken after birth perhaps?
Bumping, as perhaps someone will know more!

PiaThreeTimes · 16/05/2011 13:07

I'd go to the GP if I was you, rather than the HV.

Imnotaslimjim · 16/05/2011 13:10

Strawberry birth marks do grow over time, but are generally raised and pitted 9and so resemble a strawberry) my DD(3) had one that grew rapidly from a tiny dot to the size of a 50p in a matter of days. its not a tiny mark again and barely noticable

I have no experience of stork marks, but I do know that if a mum is worried, then it should be checked, even if just to put your mind at rest

FlingonTheValiant · 16/05/2011 13:14

Thanks everyone, I think I'll book an appointment with the GP.

It's not normally visible unless it flushes, but somedays you can see it. Very strange.

He doesn't have eczema.

I think gp too.
Have you googled different sorts of birth marks to compare it to?
Does it ever fade to the point where you barely notice it, or is it always visible?
The colours you described it remind me of a portwine stain, but I thought they were a deep colour from birth, rather than deepening over time.

faverolles · 16/05/2011 13:16

X-posts - does sound like a stork mark if it fades. Confused
See the dr :)

FlingonTheValiant · 16/05/2011 17:26

Oh dear, I hope it's not a port wine stain. It's dead centre of his forehead and I was hoping it would fade :(

dd has a stork bite on her forehead. when she was born i thought it was bruising or something from the birthing process, but it didn't go. it was just a red mark between her eyebrows, which was sometimes more pronounced than others: darker when she was flushed, for whatever reason.

she's 2.4 now and it's barely noticeable but does become more obvious if she's having a tantrum upset. i understand that stork bites on the forehead nearly always fade away completely by the time they reach 3, and dd's does look as if it's going to.

stripeywoollenhat · 16/05/2011 18:38

and i meant to say - the point of my post - that when i did some googling when she was small, it seemed like there were quite a range of sizes for the mark and some children did have them covering a lot of their foreheads, so it being bigger doesn't mean it's not a stork bite

virginiasmonalogue · 16/05/2011 18:43

my dd had one on her forehead. A tiny bit of it went down her nose. She also had one on the nape of her neck.

I thought it would never go but it did. The patch on her nose was quite small but lasted until she was about 3.5.

Thanks everyone, that's all really reassuring. I think I'll take him to clinic tomorrow and ask them there and then see the GP if they're not sure.
